Looking at a 2016 Ford 250 6.7 liter diesel

Looking at a used 2016 Ford 250 crew cab 4x4, 6.7 Liter diesel with 20k miles. Are there any known problems with this truck or engine? Dependability? Recurring maintenance problems? I haven't owned a diesel before. Thanks for any and all advice.

I have an F250 2013 6.7. I have had no problems with mine and I bought it used as well almost exactly 2 years ago. It is a very nice truck with loads of power. I know I'm pulling a TT going down the road, but this parachute won't bog it down.

The only downside is maintenance costs are higher. Here in Ky, my dealer does oil changes for about $5 more than my cost at Wal-Mart. Draining 13 quarts of oil into a 5 gallon bucket was nuts to me at that price. The fuel filter is the same - only a very few bucks for the dealer to do.

This truck is also my daily driver. Very comfortable ride. Just have to park it in the lower 40 at large parking lots 'cause it will take two spaces.

We have a 2016 F250 6.7 4x4 crew cab and love it. We have 12K miles on it. It gets 16-17mpg on the highway and 11mpg towing our fifth wheel. I do the oil changes myself and use 5W40 with Motorcraft filters. We have never been back to the dealer. Look at the Ford Powerstroke Forum web site for other Ford owners.

Got my 350 over the labor Day weekend it has just under 2500 miles so no issues yet.....

Pull one trip to Portland, Or. and back about 11 MPG for the trip

Great info, thanks. When you say higher maintenance costs, do you mean the labor cost are higher for oil changes etc. or do the oil and filters cost more? I know the quantities may be larger.
How about the DEF oil I read about? Do you add it often? Does it add much to the cost of service?

I usually do my own oil changes on the gas vehicles I've owned, but know very little about diesel. The mileage sound great for what it is. I wasn't getting that good a mileage on my class c gas rv.

Thanks for the info, I hope you continue to have good luck with the truck. The mileage seems consistent with what the other guys are saying. Sounds good.

Takes more oil, but oil filters are about the same as other engines. I always had mine serviced by Ford which usually cost $90-$100. Fuel filter service will set you back a C note for sure.

I have a 2015 F-250 6.7 diesel. Bought it new in August of 2015. I just put 20K miles on the truck and have pulled my 5th wheel 10K of those miles. Love the truck and have had no problems. Every 5K miles take in for service. Typically $125 range. Not a lot, in my opinion, in the scheme of things.

I too get between 10-11 mpg towing. It is a pleasure to tow with this truck. Oh, and love the exhaust brake..

I hope so as well, traded a 2010 250 6.4 that got 8 MPG towing the same trailer.

Looking at a 2016 Ford 250 6.7 liter diesel

2012 with 88k and zero issues

My dealer charged $150 for 3 oil changes. Not bad.

Yes when the time comes, you will need to change the diff fluid. Tranny fluid. Radiator coolant. Probably around 100k. It'll cost, but seriously any tow vehicle has maintenance. You are working these tricks hard. I would do maintenance on these things before ford asks. The mfgrs try to say their vehicles have lower maintenance costs only because they push the maintenance intervals out longer and longer. All are guilty of it imho.

Great truck. Starting 2015 they added exhaust brake. Cool.

I get 9-11mpg towing my 35' 11-12k trailer but it pulls it like a beast

It is more the quantity than labor. For an oil change, the oil and filter would cost me $89 at our Wal-Mart, $94 dollars at the dealer. Fuel filters are about the same. This way too, all service records are at the dealer.

DEF is a water and urea mix - not oil. The tank holds 5 gallons and will last 8000 miles for daily driving. If you tow a lot, 5000 miles. DEF can be bought at Wal-Mart or Sam's club. I get the Blue Def at Sam's for about $10 in a 2.5 gallon container. Fill it twice a year.

Had a 2011. 6.7. 95,000 mile. No issues. Now have a 2014. 6.7. 60,000 mile on it. Both are (were) F-350. Pull heavy equipment all the time for my business.

Plenty of power. Never check the fuel mileage. The dash will say 19 or 20 on long road trips (non-towing). Generally if I never reset dash it will read in the 13 MPG (towing and non-towing ). I never put much faith in what the dash reports and I don't do actual calculations.

But I'm sure you will like the the ride & drive. The 6.7 for me has been a great motor with plenty of power.

If you haven't already, it might be worth a quick for a new 2016 on the dealer's lot. There are still some new '16's around and the discounts are pretty good. Local Ford dealer here has a '16 cc Lariat PSD over 12k off MSRP.

We have a 2012 F-250 6.7...great truck...King Ranch is a beauty.. I don't think you necessarily need the 4X4 as you'll not be taking the fifth wheel off road and it lowers your MPG. I have the B & W Built In Hitch with air bags. I use the Andersen Hitch which pulls 24,000 lbs. and only weighs 32 lbs...very easily removed (2 minutes). I bought my Andersen at Jeff Couch RV Nation in Hamilton, OH...about $700.

Had a 2016 F250 for 6 months and 8 days. Ran 18,912 miles with zero problems. Over 10,000 towing the 5er. Only reason to go to the F350 was the low, low payload of the F250.

I have a 2015 F-250 6.7 diesel 4X4 with 45k miles pulling a 14k 5th wheel and have no problems, it pulls mountains with no problems and the engine brake on the downhills is an awesome feature. The only thing I would do differently is getting an F-350 for a little more cushion on weight.

I have a '12 with 106k on it. Everything good so far but two hiccups. Two check engine lights within the last 5000 miles. They were injector and exhaust sensor codes. I found that I had reduced power while towing with the light on. After a while and some injector cleaner the issue went away both times. Been a pretty solid engine overall for the last 25k miles. I would recommend it.

Takes more oil, DEF, fuel costs more, parts and labor will generally cost more. Dealer who change the oil and fuel filters at such great prices are the exception. Most dealers charge at least $100 for an oil change and about that much for a fuel filter.. Purchase price is much much higher.

I am on my second diesel and do my own services but I enjoy doing so. Dealer does my car because it costs $39.95. Oil, filter and rotation. Inspection and filling of fluids.

I refuse to allow them to change at their suggested 3,000 mile interval. 5,000 miles on car and 7,000 miles intervals on truck and truck gets an oil analysis done every time. That's $28.00. Vehicles have oil monitors on them and will give you a percent of life left. Using that IMO is still conservative. Everyone has their own mileage intervals and I have mine. Again, IMO, changing oil sooner than I do is not necessary and even my intervals could be shorter. It is your choice.

My son buys Royal Purple and changes his own oil. That knucklehead changes around 3,000 miles on his vehicles. Such a waste of oil and money. When I ask why so soon he says he does not want to have any engine failures. Takes after his mother.

Dino oil will provide all the protection one needs and it is almost impossible to find any oil related engine failures on today's modern engines.

You should also check Chevy/GM out before buying. Their Duramax/Allison can not be beat. Ram uses the Cummins with Aisin. Both good. Ford is good also. I shop to find what I want at the best price.
