It is a Very strong engine. Do a google search for high pressure injector pump problems. if it fails and there is ANY rust inside it from water that the water separator did not remove then Ford will refuse to honor the warranty and the repair is quite expensive!

My suggestion is to add an additional inline water separator to insure the fuel is water free. Diesel has an affinity for water and you need a filter that will remove even the water that is emulsified in the fuel. A lift pump made by FASS or Air Dog will do the trick also.

I have a F250 Diesel and am happy with it. Bought new, and now have 55k miles.

I have had two problems that occurred just out of warranty. 1) The windshield gasket came loose, and it cost me about $60 to get re-glued. 2) The DEF computer went haywire, causing me to loose nearly all power. The Ford dealer fixed it by installing new software and charging me $150.

Buy DEF in bulk. Get it at any truck stop like Pilot or Flying-J. Get in line with the big rigs and pump it into your DEF tank for much less than buying it in gallon containers. Truck stops have DEF pumps in the same lanes as diesel fuel.

Sounds reasonable, thanks for the info.

I too get between 10-11 mpg towing. It is a pleasure to tow with this truck. Oh, and love the exhaust brake..
Good info, I don't mind paying for the service and supplies, just didn't want to get into something that's more trouble and cost than it's worth.

DEF is a water and urea mix - not oil. The tank holds 5 gallons and will last 8000 miles for daily driving. If you tow a lot, 5000 miles. DEF can be bought at Wal-Mart or Sam's club. I get the Blue Def at Sam's for about $10 in a 2.5 gallon container. Fill it twice a year.
Just what I was looking for, appreciate it.

Great tips, I didn't know you could buy it like that.
Thanks

4 wheel drive operation on 2016 F250

I looked at a couple 4x4 F250 Diesels today. One had the 4 wheel shifter in the floorboard, the other had a rotating selector switch on the dash. Anyone know why there are 2 different methods on basically the same truck? Is one better than the other? Dealer didn't know.
Both were XLTs, crew cab, 6.7 Liter 6.5 ft. beds.

The only down side I have noticed is the Payload sticker on the door frame. I was looking at left over F250 diesels, my F150 EB with heavy duty tow and payload had a better payload by 2-300 lbs. than a couple of F250 diesels. The sales person just add air bags because the weight is in the front. The F250 advantage is TT towing. If your going to go for a 5er get the F350. My F150 EB is getting 9 -12 towing 9200 5er HT, good combo.

I have had both, selector switch in the 2010 F250 and the stick in the 2016 F350.

Both work/ed very well.

2010 had auto lock hubs on the front axle, 2016 has manual/free hubs.

For the switch all you need to do is twist it to 4 high/low, front axle will auto lock the hubs and you are in 4X.

Down side is IF the actuator goes out while you are in 4 low it's gonna be a slow drive home.

Shifter, you need to get out lock the hubs then shift to 4 high/low to be in 4X.

During the winter or if and when I am off road I will lock the front hubs so all I need to do is move the stick am I am in 4X.

Why two ways?

So you can have a choice I guess.

Once you start driving and towing with an oil burner you won't ever look back.

I did my research and decided on a Chevy Silverado with the 6.6 Duramax and Allison transmission. The very best transmission and a long serving reliable engine. But it needs the lift pump (which I installed) as much as the Ford because there is no fuel pump in the fuel tank. The High Pressure injection pump is also sucking fuel from the tank and teh lift pump helps in so many dimensions.

Seriously they're not bad. We have a few at work.
I've owned several trucks over the years and have always leaned toward Chevy over Ford. Seems like they had better steering and handling, but I've been test driving both and don't see much difference in the 2016 models, so it pretty much boiled down to the best deal I can find. I haven't seen a diesel chevy 3/4 ton truck that is within several thousand dollars of the price I can find in a Ford. There may be a good reason for that?

The certified F250 I'm considering has a 7 yr.100,000 mile drive train warranty and 4 year bumper to bumper. I assume that means 7 and 4 from the original purchase date of 2016. Chevy may be the same on a certified truck, I haven't checked that. Thanks for the advise.

Thanks, Well explained. I figured it was just an buyer choice option. Either will work for me. I've had Chevy gas 4x4 trucks with dash switches that worked well, but didn't know the reputation of the Ford.

I just bought a slightly used 2016, F250 this last week. (6450 miles on it at purchase). All I can say is ,"Wow". The power is unbelievable, and in the first week of in-town driving, I averaged 15.0 MPG.

Well I was just getting ready to post this. I want to thank everyone for their help and advice. I also just bought the 2016 F250 6.7L diesel last night. It was certified (for what that's worth) and less than 10K miles. Now I need to start looking for the right 5th wheel and hitch.
Thanks to all

Does it have the Ford Prep Package?

If a short bed are you going to want a slider?

Did you get the shifter or the switch?

Good move. Now you know the payload you have to work with.
