Loose receiver

Is it normal for the receiver piece of the hitch to be loose? I have looked at other hitches and all seem to fit the same. Why would you not want the hitch to be a snug fit? I can slip a 1/8 piece of metal stock into the hitch to tighten but wonder if I should?
With out the metal lots of movement and noise.
Thanks

Are you saying the square hole in the receiver is too big??? Are you sliding the correct size hitch into the receiver ??

There are at least 3 sizes of receivers.

seems odd. The only thread I have seen about slop in hitch was using an adaptor from a 2 1/2 down to 2. How old is the tow vehicle/receiver? has a large amount of corison caused the slop?

all of mine have had some play. Without it, this first time it got wet the rust would hold it in place.

Fords are notorious for having sloppy receivers. To the point that I had to put a rattle-stopper on mine.

My old GMC was so tight that it took a hammer to swap hitch shanks. Not sure which way I prefer.

Looks like rattle stopper would work. It is not dangerously loose, only noisy and irritating.
Thanks

I've welded a washer on mine and ground it down on the inner side to create a wedge.

I also remove my hitch after every use so it won't rust in. Used to work for a mechanic shop / towing shop and had a truck come in that wanted hitch removed. Rusted in so bad even with a tow truck winch hooked to it, it wouldn't come out

I also hate the rattle but a simple washer / wedge cures the problem.
