I sure miss my 6 speed; however, with the newer autos and the use of the exhaust brake (poor man's jake), I'm getting used to towing with the auto. It is just shame how much an after market tranny tune can improve shifting while towing and keep the temps down and yet the factories still keep pumping out horribly tuned, de-rated, shifting patterns geared toward EPA and warranty bull hockey. I wasn't so much in love with the auto in this '09 until the minute after I updated the TCM with an H&S tranny tune. Holy cow is it night and day.

RIP manuals. I'm going to miss teaching my kids how to drive one in 10 years.

MEH!
When I ordered my F250 you could still get a five speed manual but truth be told I was just flat out tired of shifting so I bought my first truck with an automatic.
Pulling the trailer it has been great, one pedal makes it go the other makes it stop, simple.

We are HUGE manual transmission fans at our house. We went 40 years without an automatic. But towing with a manual is a pain in the butt in rolling hills. Upshift down the hill, downshift up the hill, . . repeat over and over. And forget about using the cruise control. Or . . how about backing into a tricky campsite? I quickly realized that an automatic is the way to go when towing.

I like manual shifting......can't call me shiftless. I feel like I have some control over my vehicles. I have a manual in my Jeep Wrangler, and the missus has a manual in her Accord. The only vehicle that I have an automatic is in my truck. And I would rather have a manual in that. It sometimes shifts when I don't want it to.

I'm with Mtnguy and have a manual in my accord. Gives me a lot more feel of what's going on when turning hot laps at the track. Bad part is with Honda only pairing 7500/yr with a V6, only had to wait 4 months for my color and options.

The good news: teenaged daughter does not want to drive my car because it's a stick! Still think I'm getting her a moped!

No manual shift? Really? Next thing you are going to tell me is that they will only make Televisions that have remote controls.

With enough power at speed you don't have to worry about all the shifting.

I sure miss the manual crank starters and those acetylene headlights too. Cruise control and power windows? They're for wimps. Don't even get me started on air conditioning...

The way I see it...if someone can't handle shifting their own gears....they have no business herding a #90,000 truck down the road.

When my DW got out of grad school and started her teaching career in the late 1970s, she was going to buy her first-ever new car, and it had to be a convertible. Of course, they weren't making American convertibles at that time, so she bought a bright yellow 1979 MGB. She had never driven a manual transmission, so she made the salesman teach her how to drive it before she would buy it (now, there was a guy who must have REALLY needed to make a sale).

Fast-forward 36 years: Retired, teaching career behind her, but we still have the MG. We only drive it once or twice a year, but we still have it.

And I suppose someone will suggest putting the outhouse inside our homes and somehow get the water in there too! Just can't leave well enough alone.

On a serious note, Star Trek had cell phones decades before they were a reality.

The price of automatic transmissions is what me BUY a manual. Best thing I ever did in a vehicle. LOVE the 6 speed manual in my truck....another reason to keep it forever I guess.
less than a $1000 new clutch, pressure, flywheel and bearing.... $5000+ for a new auto

I miss my manual. Had one in my Saturn. Had one in my Mazda. When I bought the Ram I wanted to get a Manual, but no such luck. Auto was the only option.

I find it interesting in the article where they talk about only 5% of cars being manual and that's declining. The way it's written is suggestive that the lower demand for manual is what's driving it away. But in my case, I didn't by an automatic because I wanted an automatic. I bought an automatic because that was the only dang choice Ram gave me. I'm sure the sales of manuals wouldn't be declining so much if they weren't taking the choice away from us.

Oh, and IWanna: While my Saturn was cheaper for a manual, in my Mazda the manual was considered an upgrade and actually cost more.

I thought the upgrade cost was worth if in the Mazda for a couple of reasons. First, because I just enjoy driving better with a manual. Call me a control freak or whatever, I just felt happier. Second was as an added theft deterrent. I figured since the average car theft around here is joy riding kids, the likelihood of my car being stolen reduces. After all, since so many people can't drive stick, a joy riding teenager knowing how to move it more than 5 feet is pretty slim. So most would look, see it was a stick, and move on to easier prey.
