Below is a picture of it's display. Simple one plug hook up to the OBDII port under the dash.

WOW !! Good call on the ScanGauge II! So much easier than the route I was thinking about, and it shows so many other readings besides the one I was after. Advanced Auto matched the $111.99 online price out the door, no waiting by the mailbox! Thanks for your help.

Back 900 pages or so.. I think it was for gas. But wither way it is a good resource.

I was interested to see the 215 on the Durmax.. Mine never got above 170 in the mountains, but good to hear the max temp to look out for.

Excellent. You can use that promo code all the time on other products and pick them up in the store. I do it all the time.
I'm guessing you found the ScanGauge website with the listing of X-gauges that you can enter in? You can also piggy back them for 8 display.
It's a priceless piece for guys like me running a Ford 6.0 diesel. Oil/water temp delta is a biggy.

Yes, I found the X-gauge codes on the website. I'm not sure what you mean by piggy backing for 8 display. Sorry, I'm from the age where you drill a hole in the pan and stick a sending unit in it and run a wire up to the dash and attach it to a cheap gauge. I put it in my GMC 1500 gasser to monitor the tranny temps while towing. I can't find the oil temp on mine, computer must not register oil temp. It's a great tool just the same. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Piggyback or daisy chain I mean you can hook 2 together with an additional cord so you don't have to scroll through to check other readings. In essence you have 2 live displays coming from the one OBDII port.

So, what kind of trans Temps are you seeing?

I've been using ScanGaugeII for 10 years. Very useful device.

I'm following you now! I don't need to see 8 readings at once, so I'll just use it as is for now. As far as temps go, it's been between 98 to 130 degrees not towing. Cold weather here in K.C. keeping it down I think. I'm not sure what max temp should be for it either. Any idea?

250 (might be 230) I think. My 1500 would get to 205 at its highest when towing.

GCVW ambient air temp, and hills will all play part but on flat land towing with my Ford it's around 165-180. Pulling long 8% grade it will creep up around 200+. Keep it below 230 for any extended time and your fine.

Best thing to monitor your truck is a CTS 2... but for the Allison 100° above outside temp. But you don't want her to get over 230 pulling a hill. Your clutchs will hate you and it might Limp the tranny

Its a 2014. Extended cab. I just get bored on the hr drive to work. I flipped through the read outs the other morning and it was 11 degree's and trans temp 198. I really don't understand it. I had the service tech at the dealer cheek the trans oil ever time said it is all ok. And it don't have that burnt smell. I really keep a eye on it. He said that if it gets too hot a warning will go off in my instrument panel.

You seem concerned but I wouldn't be. Many transmissions of today are thermostatically controlled so they warm up quickly so they're in the desired operating temp range.
Also, some have multiple PIDs for transmission temps. You may be reading the sensor of the used hot ATF before it's pushed through the coolers. You may have another temp sensor available that may read 15-20 degrees cooler.

Most light duty cars and trucks run around the coolant temp for trans temps. The HD trucks run a lot cooler due to big coolers. 8K Behind a Diesel truck they run 160-180 F max usually.

I just installed a trans cooler this evening and tomorrow I install the Gage. I am planing on placing it into the test port and I read that its not an optimal spot and some say its good enough, the manufacture of the temp Gage states to use the test port so i'm not sure. I have also read a few posts where people stated that they duct tape the probe to the trans output line and as close as possible and it works well for them. Still not sure what my approach i will be tomorrow but I think i will be going with the test port on the side of the trans. Another thing I did that I read a lot of disagreements on is I did not bypass the original trans cooler on the factory radiator. The cooler installation manual also called this the optimal way to cool and it makes sense to me. What do you all think ?

FWIW, a transmission tech told me he likes to see the temps get a bit above 212 from time to time. That is hot enough to boil out any moisture that has gotten into the fluid. The trans will "breathe" a bit as it cycles from cold to warm, and that can bring in humid air.

212 is getting up there for a Allison. A Allison should run 100* above outside temp. Mrpep do u have a duramax? If so you should run a edge insight to monitor your truck period. It reads off the ecm. I last have a truck with gages also. I prefer the cts over gagues.

160-180 is warm enough to cook off any moisture, it just takes longer than if it was at 212. If the truck is ran almost everyday moisture is not an issue. My Yukon sees temps to only 165 or so. So in your mechanics theory it should have 5 years worth of moisture in it. I assure you it doesn't.
Just putting this out there so no one gets worried their Trans is too cold.

Now, where his theory holds true is in motor oil of piston engines in fixed wing aircraft. But that's another story.

Follow the instructions of the supplier. They have likely tested it throughly. Not bypassing could cause a drop in pressure and cause flow issues of the atf but I have not seen your set up. That would be worse than just the stock cooler.
