Max Chevy Trans Temperature

Ok I did a little checking on my way home from work today. I decided to watch my trans temp on the way home with nothing in tow. This is what it got up to
I was so shocked

That may be a bad sensor. I ran about 192 pulling with 95 degree outside temp about a month ago. Otherwise, I'm well below 160.

Let it sit 24 hours. Then before starting, compare 3 temps.
1. Ambient air
2. Engine Coolant Temp.
3. Automatic Transmission Temp

They all should be within a few degrees Fahrenheit.

The highest mine has ever been is 197 and that was after jockeying into a tight site after driving for 2hrs on a 90 degree day.

Oh yes I forgot to put the temperature outside was 71. Eng. temp was about 210 or so

Yeah...that seems much too high. I normally see about a ten degree increase through town at slower speeds but, after an hour or so of highway, back down in temp. I agree, let it get cold and compare all the temps.

Mine runs between 192 and 199 when towing.

Maybe someone addressed this already, but I'm wondering at what temp. does the transmission fluid begin to break down. Going over Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado I watched my fluid climb to 207 degrees and am wondering if I should go ahead and replace it? Normally runs about 160 on a hot day in Texas.

I think it was mentioned...over 270 ish if I'm remembering right. I was running up I45 out of Houston last year and my outside temp was showing 104. Trans actually got up to about 208. I believe there is a trans overheat light but it never came on. It felt like it was starting to slip a little so I pulled over and cooled it down. My rule has become change it if it goes over 200 for more than about 30 min. just to be on the safe side.

My truck is a 2014 I bought it when it had 400 miles on it. It has done this the whole time I have had it. Believe it or not that is about the same as when I row the camper. A guy at a KOA told me one day that it has a 195 degree thermostat in it and that is why. I have no idea my first GMC ever

I'm going to have to partially call BS on that one, lol. Without an external cooler, you're relying on the radiator for cooling but, even if you don't have an external trans cooler I have a hard time believing you're running that hot with those outside temps. If you are and you don't have one..definitely get a cooler. Cheap and easy insurance.

Well I looked at my outside temp it was 71 we did have a cool day in wv today and then I took the picture of my temp. The outside temp is on my radio display and I could not get it and the dashboard in the same pic. But I have no reason to lie about it. That is what it was. Sorry if I have taken you the wrong way but the picture speaks for itself

I have asked my dealer service about it and they said they have no idea when a warning light would come on and yes I may have a bad sensor idk.

No I don't have a cooler on it. It is all factory.

No, I wasn't calling you out. I don't doubt that's what it said, just that I don't think it's right. Then again, it may be. I'd definitely get a decent cooler for towing though. I've heard of people seeing 30+ degrees difference versus not having one.

I am sorry for miss understanding you. My apologies. But how ever this truck has ran 200 plus the hole time I have had it. Dealer said its fine. With camper in tow or not

With the outside temps near 100 + hear in Texas, my transmission temps will go between 198 and 203. My engine temp also goes up a few degrees. Normally, my engine temp runs around 210, regardless of outside temp. However, when towing in the real heat, 100 +, I have seen 215. On the engine temp gauge, there is nothing that indicates what is considered overheated. Does anyone know at what temperature an engine is considered overheated?

On my recent trip few days ago my tranny was reaching 230 on some inclines. 5500 trailer, 2011LT 4.8 Cc. I have an additional tranny cooler from etrailer-the bigger one. Temp outside was around.83.
