No magic number but I have found 60% max of rated tow weight should be your max towing weight. Don't forget all the "stuff" you add like food, toys, supplies, people, etc. Sounds like you are already at max. Stay are pretty flat roads, (Rt 95) and slow down (60 or so) and you should be fine.

Not all states have the 80k weight limit. Some low more, I do not know if I've heard of any that are less.

Here in PA a tri axle can weight 73280lbs max .. In nj I am told they can be 79k. Log trucks in some states can be 105k lbs.. Depends on your states laws. In PA it is 80k lbs before an overweight permit would need to be issued. I do not think we have a higher limit for log trucks.

Upgraded

I pulled the trigger. The reason I started this discussion was that I thought I needed an upgrade but was wondering how high to go. Anyway, looking toward the future, i Upgraded to a F-150 3.5L dual turbo cranking out 375 HP and a tow capacity of over 10K lbs. I should be good to go any where now with a 4500 / 4700 lb trailer.
