Yeah, I only look at total gross trailer rating for towing purposes and cargo carrying capacity. The dry weight is only a tool to determine CCC.

It's also a tool to sell overweight TT's to unsuspecting newbies.

Totally agree with you. But to many people unfortunately make assumptions before we know the why. Could have been a hundred reasons on why this happened. Hopefully nobody was injured.

In tow a 5th wheel (9500# when loaded) with my 2018 f150 eco supercrew 6.5' box 331 gear
Love it and the thing pulls it great.

2012 Ram 1500 crew cab 4x4 ST 1360 lb payload. Tow a Dutchmen 268bhs dry weight 6873, loaded between 7600 & 8500 lbs depending on duration of trip and availability of water. Recently did ALBERTA to Yellowstone and back 2500kms round trip. No issues at 8546lbs weighed with full tank of water on the way down. 200lbs below axle weights with Blue Ox sway pro with 1500 lb bars and 988lb tongue weight. 160lb wife, 76lb kid, 48lb kid and 210lb self and two bikes in the truck bed and that’s it.

I don't care why you are asking. I'll tell you my feeling, i have never seen a 5th wheel overcome the tow-er when changing lanes, but it seems common with trailers. Your truck won't break into if overloaded, back before injectors, everyone had trouble going up the mountain. My worry is can I stop in an emergency? Take your rig out to a lonely place and find out. So what if your top end is 55, probably safer anyway, just make sure you can stop when I cut you off and we will both be happy

Half ton, 1 ton or semi.... You will only stop as fast as traction allows. My half ton stops a crazy amount better than my old F350, yet you all would feel better seeing the F350 emblem on the side of the truck.

My Hemi also is way more capable of pulling a mountainside than my old 7.3L with a 50HP tuner. What I give up now is fuel economy, my 7.3 would get 11 or 12 with a 7500 trailer and the Hemi gets around 7-8 mpg.

Overall, I find my new half ton to be better than the old 2000 F350 7.3L PSD crew cab long bed in about every measurable way.

I don't know, but you might be leaving out a word: maximum. As in, "Ram says maximum payload is 1885." That means that if you get zero options, 2WD, and the stars align, sure, you could see the maximum number.

Look on your door jamb. There will be the actual payload rating of your 1500.
Yep ... generic manual says mine is 1900 lbs but door sticker says 1870 lbs ...

Eeyup just about the same as my 2016 Ram 1500. I sat down with my friendly salesman who knows how to set up a truck. We went line item by line item on a base model Tradesman quadcab 2wd with 5.7, 8spd, 3.92 gears adding tow package and very little else. By doing this my payload came in at 1870.

Don't need all the frills and fancy because "Chrome won't get ya home".

I have the same truck but payload is 1885 with the 3.6 pen star pretty sure your hemi is more than 15lbs heavier. I say their numbers are more voodoo then science.

I get what you're saying, but TV brakes locked up ?? ABS 100% on ?? ABS prevents your wheels from locking up and I always test my controller to prevent the TT brakes from locking up.

OK but I still bet you haven't tested a "MAX" stop with the RV hooked up. I am not suggesting you do that as I bet there would be a number of crashes because not everyone has set their brakes properly.

The point was that it may bepossible to start up and pull a 40' 15,000# trailer with a 6 cyl 1/2 ton but it sure isn't possible to do anything aproachinga hard stop and that is where the failure in safe operation becomes noticable. But it's too late them.

Here is a web site that has a good video explaining how to properly select Truck & RV size. Have you done a good job?

So before doing a “ max stop” test, something I’m not sure would be recommended but say it is. What factors would you have to consider for it to be legit.
Test 1 dry concrete with no debris. Nope wouldn’t work you would say.
Test 2 country blacktop road. Nope not good enough what if raining you couldn’t stop it with your 1/2 ton.

While I am sure it exists, I want to see the data of braking distance in same configuration truck. Only difference being 1/2 3/4 or 1 ton truck. Same weight same tire pattern same engine and transmission set up. I haven’t seen that data presented. Until then the max stop is just as hypothetical as it comes. Max braking is for emergency stopping so unless you have an excact stopping distance and you stay that far behind ( to include reaction time )for your loaded rig in the current weather and road conditions and never allow anything inside that zone. It won’t matter what you drive and pull you are still at risk of accident.

My 1/2 ton truck and 5th wheel trailer loaded out at close to max or sometimes a little over will stop real well in normal dry conditions and does well even on wet blacktop.

If you fellers are thinking that the truck is doing all the braking you are dead wrong.

Half ton up to one ton trucks will still be sending a voltage signal to the trailer brakes and depending on the gain setting of the brake controller you should have the trailer brakes handling all the necessary stopping power needed for the trailer load. The truck brakes will be handling the trucks own load.

You should never rely on the mass of the truck to handle the trailers stopping. In fact the trailer should have enough pullback to prevent jackknife situations in hard braking situations.

By properly dialing in the brake controller to driving conditions you should have no problems.
