My hitch pin hole is slightly out of round

Is this something I should worry about?

I noticed this weekend my hitch pin hole is slightly egg shaped

Is this normal wear and tear? or should I be concerned? This is an OEM hitch on a 2013 Silverado.

I wound not worry about it but I did read recently where you should change out the pins and clips annually (but I do not)

It only has 40k miles on it, and I've owned it for half that, and only towed 1500 miles total or so.

Honestly if it were me I would switch out my pins and try it out. Seems normal to me. I have been In many trucks that have the bang and pop of that and have been fine. If you are worried about it I would replace it. It is cheap insurance and a relaxing piece of mind. You can pick these hitches up fairly cheap and install is not bad.

I would add an anti-rattle hitch accessory like this one from etrailer

however if you have never towed beyond 1500 miles, I would not worry about it... this wear probably came from the previous owner.

Changing pins will not help a bit unless the pin itself shows wear, there is no reason to change it. The pins are harder than the hitch receiver. You can minimize the wear by drilling and tapping the reinforcing sleeve to 3/8" -16 to the side and bottom of the receiver and install 3/8 gr 8 bolts and nuts.

Mine is too. Just pops occasionally. Was caused by using a bent end pin. Just waiting to make a spacer.

Use a little CRC White Lithium Spray Lube. Helps stop the wear from dust grinding.

As long as there are no cracks involved radiating from hole. It will be ok.

You could drill to next size pin(tractor supply-tractor section) and replace.

If you are still concerned about future wear on the hitch pin, I would suggest you buy and use an anti-rattle stabilizer hitch tightener. There are a number of brands on the market to choose from. This will eliminate the hitch rattle that contributes to hitch pin hole wear, and will give a quieter tow for your bumper pull or hitch accessory.

It could also be caused by a receiver hole slighty off center causing the issue and not a real issue of wear. If it was elongated with the pull of the pin I would be worried. a anti rattle device would help and keep the receiver from bouncing up and down.

Bent hitch pins

A few years back (20 ?) Ihad a Silverado that was consistently bending 5/8 inch pins. Worked with service manager at Chev. dealership to correct the problem. As a last resort, he put a new hitch assembly on. No more bent pins. The original hitch had holes that were misdrilled . The bad hitch was not pulling straight. It was off just a little. The hitch was not pulling parallel to the line of travel.

the holes are punched not drilled and they are punched before the material is roll formed (it's flat) so the alignment when punching was off. It's not profitable to drill that many holes. Hitches are made on a production line with robotic equipment. A lot of OEM receiver hitches) are manufactured in Findlay, Ohio btw.

I been using a product called hitch vise for years and it works great. No hitch slop at all.

Thank you so much for correcting me as to how hitches are manufactured. In my ignorance I did not know that mislocated holes were punched and not drilled.
