Bullet Proofing

The first 6.0's had some problems that COULD crop up at around 100 to 125K miles. I chose to not wait and because I'm retired and need to keep busy, I chose to be pre-emptive. I did the EGR cooler, and oil cooler changed to external, IPR water filter and head studs. Because you have the whole top of the motor off, why not pull the heads and put in the studs and better gaskets. Admittedly getting the left head off (need a special offset socket for the back bolt) wasn't something I'd like to do every day.
With everything that came with the truck, exhaust, GV Overdrive and it being a 550, Husky Hitch Class IV receiver (I bought it used with only 28000 miles on it, I felt it was worth doing to end up with a 300,000 mile truck for les than 35000 dollars. Took about a week of work and a sore back, but feel it was worth it.

Does this mean that GM and Chevy Trucks blow up like China Bomb tires?

My experience with GM took them out of my buying picture totally... Even though that's been a long time ago, the old saying still rings true... "Screw me once, shame on you. Screw mw twice, shame on me." To those that own GM products, I hope you get better treatment from them than I did. Too bad the lemon laws weren't around back then.

I have been a Ford guy for a long time. However, this new truck is just as nice and runs strong enough for me, at a better bottom line. I will readily admit that I liked the Ford a touch better, but couldn't justify the extra $6K for nearly the same equipment. Now that I have the Ram, I like it enough to say... I LIKE IT!!!

I never was a GM person. Since I was a kid I was a Ford guy. Have a few buddies with the 6.0 Ford who got screwed over by Ford. Bought my first ever Ram in 2007 and loved it. Traded up to the 2013 Ram 2500 and love it even more. I think the massive amount of GM recalls should speak volumes of what your buying.

GM products, for me, have always enjoyed the dealer's garage more than mine. I like my Fords and would consider a Ram or Toyota but there will be no GM products in my future.

I like GM stuff, but I haven't driven any in 11 years. That video is enlightening and entertaining at the same time-it only scratches the surface of the issue.
But.... no politics here, so I'll quit while I'm ahead.

My career required much travel, and I would keep a Silverado pickup for about 18 mos. on a lease, then trade it in on a new one. This went on for 16 yrs. till 2005. Every truck was excellent, and I only recall 2 warranty claims for minor things during the whole time.

However, my son bought a new 2013 Chev 5.3 in November 2014. It has been a nightmare. Poor run quality, runs rough, blue smoke during acceleration, went through a quart of oil every 1500 km (900 mi).

He fought with the dealer and GM the whole time. He was told the oil consumption was "within specifications".

He finally won the fight, and with 12000 km (7200 miles) on the motor, they finally agreed to a total motor rebuild. Eight pistons, head work etc. He got it back last week.

I would have demanded a new short block at least, but it seems the run quality has improved. No more vibration at the idle. We'll see about the oil consumption.

I know this is a "diesel" thread...sorry about the hijack.

Like Schrederman, I was always a Ford man for my personal trucks. For my business I have 3 2012 F450 diesels DRW pickups we use for cross country towing for emergency telecom trailers and 2 2011 Dodge 2500 Shortbed diesels. Since we travel with 4 engineers per truck, my crews love the large cab on the Fords and rear seat. After my last two King Ranch Ford F250's were stolen and never found (even with Viper alarm on second one) I bought a 2014 2500 Ram Laramie diesel for a change. I like it but I miss the softer ride of my F250's but with the Ram, it does not squat when I drop my 294 Crusader on it so don't need the air bags I had on my f250's. Here in Texas the Fords are a high value target for thieves. Bro has had his broken in to twice and steering column pryed apart while alarm was blaring but since he has a viper, it notified him both times and he was able to get out back and stop both attempts. Schrederman, tip, put a bike lock around the dang spare as the Ram does not have the spare lock like our fords. We lost the spare on one of the 2500's. Don't know when, but when we needed it, we found out it was gone!

I just spoke to a gentleman at the Dodge dealership this morning. He runs 5ers from Indiana and delivers the all over the country. He runs the huge mac daddy 5ers as well as the smaller ones. Here is what he is pulling them with. A 2014 Ram 2500 Long Horn Crew 6.7 with aftermarket air bags, Michelin tires and a top of the line hitch. Asked how it does and he said runs great. No sway with the in cab remote adjustable airbags. I asked him about going to a dually and he said he doesn't need it and has no problems. Why spend more money on two more tires. He has 60k on his 2014 already, just changed his oil and is heading out to Indiana to pick a run to Wyoming. Asked him about a Chevy and Ford and he chuckled and said they can't do what he does with the Ram.

I truly believe all brands are good and they all have had their individual "issues" that just adds fuel to the "my brand of truck is better". I would not have any problem buying any truck from the top 3 manufacturers. I like Ford's and always have, so I buy them.
And BTW Slympicins, if your are in Sevierville that is near Pidgeon Forge, the Smoky Mountain Knife works is on my top 5 of the coolest stores I have been in.

New Diesel Pickup

I hear you all. Our Ford dealership ranks down with the bottom feeders. Our Chevy dealer thinks everyone here are millionaires. The guy I was referring to was a customer who has had all of the top three and prefers the Dodge.
Yes I'm in Sevierville and drive by the Knife Works all the time. Awesome place. They just opened a gun dealership inside their store. So now it's guns and knives of every imaginable make and model.
BTW. I loved my Ford but could not stomach the dealership here or in Knoxville. Chevrolet dealership wasn't much better. Rocky Top Dodge stole my business away from Ford or I would be still driving one.
