New dually, need advice

I have a long bed Silverado 3500 SRW and I plan to stay with GM. I intend to get a dually long bed. On the next truck I intend to install another B&W hitch but this time I plan to install a slider. With the hitch slid out that will make the ride better. That’s the advice I need, would anyone install the slider

I have Ford F350 dually, towing a 42 foot 5th wheel toy hauler. After much shopping and research, I choose the CURT Q24 over the B&W. You don't need a slider with a long bed. The functionality, quality, ease of use, bang for the buck, and lighter weight of the Q24 makes it a better deal in my mind. The sliding hitch also requires an extra mounting piece. The Q24 fits right into factory installed pucks. No tools necessary. It comes apart in two pieces, easy to take out and store. My ride is fine. I don't think a sliding hitch has anything to do with a smoother ride.

You will make matters worse. You don't want the pin behind the axle for towing, you want it over the axle.

When I had my dually I towed a number of 5ers with the long box. Never seen a need for a slider and the ride was very good and never an issue. Later RJD

you will not need it with the long bed
i,am not sure i needed it with 6.5 bed
so i have since went with a pull rite super light

I have a slider in my short bed and the only time it extends is when you are turning. Normal driving down the hwy it is in the same position as a fixed one. No need to waste your money or weight on a slider.

In some places, especially in Australia, it is a legal requirement that the hitch is mounted with the center of it (where the pin will be) 1" forward of the rear axle. This places the weight of the trailer in the right place for good weight distribution. If you tow with the hitch behind the axle (even a tiny amount) the nose of the TV will rise and you will create big stability issues with the truck and trailer.

You definitely do not need a slider with a long box Silverado, this is an unnecessary expense. With the hitch mounted in the right place in a long box there is heaps of room for turning (a full 120 degrees or more if you're game) with no chance of putting the nose of the trailer through your back window. You still have a crappy turning circle, but hey, that's the (small) penalty of a long box and some things we just have to live with.

I don't have the experience but from reading experiences of a lot of others I get the impression that a dually is great for towing, terrible for turning and often of no extra value unless you travel in places where you need that extra traction, and often gives more drama that benefits gained. But as I said, no first-hand experience. They do look cool though.

You will place the weight behind the rear axel therefore removing weight on your steering thus causing control issues, unless you like doing wheelies, don't do this. There is no reason for a slider with a long bed truck.

Spock, I think your money would be better spent on some type of air ride king pin box. You know, the kind with an air bag and shock. Seems that would be more beneficial for ride comfort.

Precisely correct. The further aft of the rear axle the hitch pin is the greater the arm and the more the front end of the truck is lifted. When traveling over bumpy roads this can actually cause a loss of traction on the front tires and resulting loss of control of the vehicle.

I know, this is an extreme example, but it demonstrates the point.

We have a SB and a slider. What the slider does do, by moving the pin aft of the rear axle is shorten the turn radius when backing the 5er significantly! This makes getting into tight spots MUCH simpler.

A slider hitch opens the door for more movement and slop between the trailer and the truck. I have one in my short bed and after purchasing my Crusader, (has the cutouts on the Cabover that allow for tight turning with shortbeds), I welded it up to stop the clunking on takeoff and stopping. My ultimate plan is to replace it. Look into the air ride pin boxes if your ride is an issue. Also a one ton is generally going to ride rougher unless you need it for trailer size.
