Will I buy a new truck or won't I? That is the question. Rather than ask what can I tow, I'm going to ask others with similar setups what experience they've had and at what point (weight wise) it's time to upgrade the tow vehicle. We just bought a new , bigger trailer and haven't gone on the road yet. I've done the three weights on the CAT scale with representative loads in both truck and trailer. I've got the right size WDH with sway control installed properly. I understand GVWR, GVCWR, TW, Payload, Axle Weight Capacity, Dry Weight, Wet Weight, Beer Weight, etc. I've filled out the spreadsheet and I KNOW I'm within all my limits. Here's my current set up:
2014 GMC Sierra Double Cab Regular Bed 1500 - 5.3 - 3.42 - 7200 GVWR - Payload 1755 - Tow capacity of 9600 - GCVWR 15,000. Truck weighs ~6000 lbs with me, the wife, full tank of gas, hitch on, and typical cargo load. That leaves 1200 for tongue.
2017 Flagstaff 26FKWS - loaded weight is ~6900 with tongue weight right around 820 lbs. (Includes Propane and batteries. We travel with tanks empty). Total all in weight is 12,900. All numbers within thresholds.
So....Will I be happy with my set up or should I start begging and pleading with the wife for an early birthday tow vehicle before we hit the road to see the Oregon Coast? If I'm good now, how much more trailer before I'm not?Appreciate any and all insights from those with more experience (which is probably most of you!)
