Newbie here!!

Hey y’all! So I am planning my first cross country move from Texas to Indiana. I have a 1500 Chevy Silverado with the following specs. My trailer is rated at 6350lb dry, and I plan on putting as much as I can into my other car for the move to have less weight in the trailer, anticipating no more than 300lbs cargo. I’m having a hard time understanding exactly what weight limits are allowed. I am planning on buying a WDH and have gotten a few “expert opinions” but I am wondering what y’all would suggest?

Those all are generic numbers.

What does the yellow/white sticker on your driver side door jam say your trucks payload capacity is?

You should have a label like this. Also people are going to need year, engine size, trans cooler or no trans cooler. Most will say you need to go to a scale weigh the trailer weigh the truck ect.

I know I suggested a trial run to Abilene in a previous post. If you truck struggles on that trip. You will struggle on way to Indiana. If the truck does fine but you aren’t comfortable towing again it will make for a long trip. However with the WDH truck does good you fill fine it should be an enjoyable trip

You need to post the other silver sticker. It'll have a Max Payload number.

Moose, GM doesn't have a yellow payload sticker like Ford does. It's a silver sticker.

I learned something then as I haven’t owned a GM, but Ram, Toyota and Ford have same sticker. Thank you

Yes I am still planning for that small trip. I plan on getting the WDH this week to prepare for that. Thank you!! Once I get that in I do plan to take it to the scales to see what numbers I get.

Both of my Silverados have the yellow sticker.

Not sure when GM changed it but this is the latest version with the payload capacity on it.

Lisa, you need to post year, make and model of trailer or post its specs, not just the fictional dry weight.

IMHO, that's way too long of a trailer for a 1/2 ton.

What are the foreseeable issues? Or what should I be more cautious about when hauling?

Your truck was not designed for large trailers.

Your trailer is longer, wider and taller than tested by Ford. Thus those specs are sort of misleading.

In high winds from the side loosing control and rolling over is a possibility. Big sail! Small truck.

Be very careful in gas stations. I would guess that you cannot get in and out of the majority of them. Got to be careful. Trailers this long are not easy.

I doubt you will drive 200 miles a day without a fill up. Some of the large truck stops have an rv lane. It will have gas.

If you have an all electric fridge, it will drain the battery before sundown in Texas. Plan ahead.

We travel between Houston and Dayton Ohio via Louisville ky. Roads are fine. Avoid Nashville traffic as best you can.

I hope you are planning a test run first. The first week of trailer owning, is work. I recommend being near a big hardware store.

I’ve been going through threads all day today and I realized my truck might be just a bit too small. I drove it empty around town and on the highway, it felt great. I plan to take it to get full weights of truck, trailer, truck+trailer and see what I’m working with. I do plan on buying a WDH with Sway Control to help with the sway and load distribution. I just installed the trailer brake, as my truck has the trailering package setup. Most of my cargo that I have in it currently will be put into my car to keep the weight as low as possible. I will be doing a test run to get the feel of what I’ll be pulling, gas mileage, etc. I’m preparing for the worst, but staying hopeful. I just need it to make the trip!

If you have a tow/haul button activate it every time you start the truck. It turns off automatically when turn off the truck. Plan your gas stops carefully and figure 8 mpg. I usually fill every 150-200 miles.

GM now includes that trailering information sticker on new Silverados and Sierras and has since 2019 for the half ton, but the yellow sticker is still there, as it is required by federal law. Personally, I'd like to see all manufacturers include a trailering information sticker on all vehicles designed to tow.

While I love my two Silverado 1500 trucks, in my opinion, you are trying to pull too much trailer with too little truck. While pulling this trailer is doable with my 2019 and its more powerful 6.2L engine, 10 speed transmission and max trailering package, it's right on the cusp of where I'd feel much more comfortable pulling it with a 3/4 ton. But I certainly wouldn't pull it with my 2016, which is more closely related to your truck.

You have been driving the truck and trailer around without a WDH and/or brake controller?

It can be done and done safely, just follow the rules every trailer toting driver should.
1) keep safe distance between you and object in front of you.
2) you don’t have to do the speed limit 60-65 is more than fast enough.
3) be alert looking down the road little further than normal.
Most importantly don’t do what you don’t feel comfortable doing.
Caring an extra can of gas can’t hurt either.

Finally enjoy
