Question Nissan 5.0L Diesel. Titan XD for tow vehicle

Just an open question/opinion about using a Nissan Titan XD 4X4 (5.0 L Diesel) for my tow vehicle. I hear every thing about the BIG 3. Dodge, Ford, Chevy. But I want to hear from or those who really dove into this consideration. I currently have a Forest River 2109s. We're not thinking of upgrading our TT anytime soon. But this I feel the Armada is maxed out. Its a 2006 Nissan Armada 4X4 SE (that isn't really designed for towing). I mean it pulled us from NC to ME and back (2400 round trip) but it was really taxing on it and averaged of 9 MPG. Any input would be helpful. Thank you.

IMHO, The Titan XD is overpriced and still just a 1/2 ton.

A F150 Ecoboost with Max Tow package and HD Payload package would be way cheaper and better equipped for towing. Plus it's a well tested platform.

I use my 11 Xterra with a v6 4.0l to pull my 2306 with no probs. Sure mileage sucks... I'm pulling 4500# or so loaded and dry. Avg 9-11 mpg in the mountains. My province is all mountains.

Check the sticker on the door of the truck, get your trailer weighed if you haven't already, and do the math.

The Titan either will or won't meet requirements no matter what people here tell you.

Yep..the Titan XD diesel payload numbers are on the low side. Just an average half ton when it comes to towing, maybe a 5000 lb. travel trailer.

I have looked quite a bit into these trucks. It will certainly tow better than the Armada but be aware there has been a fair amount of bugs in these trucks. The fuel mileage hasn't been as good as you may think. There is no engine brake, has a small fuel tank and typical 1/2 ton payload. On the positive side, Nissan is offering a bumper to bumper 5 year 100k mile warranty. In my opinion you would be better off buying a 2500 Ram if you want a Cummins. If wanting to stay with Nissan, the gas XD may be a better choice.

I have been following them as well but don't own one. It will be more truck than the Ecodiesel Ram or whatever the Diesel F150 ends up as assuming they ever get around to it. They also sell for more than $10,000 off MSRP so they end up being not outrageous price. Me I think the Ecodiesel Ram is all the truck I need and them being out longer are showing up more in the used truck market where I always buy. I have a 2004 5.9 Cummins now which payload wise isn't much better than the Titan, somewhere around 1750#. It isn't as reliable as people would make you believe either but it does have 275,000 miles on it. Certainly far from trouble free but at least it got there and continues on.

I currently own a 2017 Nissan Titan with the gas 5.6L engine and 7 speed transmission. It has a payload of around 1,600 lbs and tow rating of 9,200 lbs. I tow a Flagstaff super lite 26FKWS TT when loaded comes to about 6,500 lbs. The Titan with the new 5.6L engine pulls it with no problem. Someone once told me - if you're worried about gas mileage when towing then its time to quit towing.

New Titan HD 5.0

Don't know what everyone is talking about. Had a regular titan and pulled a 2016 forest river ulta lite. 7000lbs. The old one worked fine other that the 8 mpg. Bought a new 2016 Titan diesel. Love, love, love it. Its rated for 11,550 lbs towing. Getting 11 to 12 towing, 16 to 18 around town and 20 to 22 on the hwy. Have 9600 miles on it. Its pretty loaded one step down from the top and only cost my 44,000.00 sticker just over 59,000.00. A lot less than any of the big three. Always had a Ford P/U. Would of loved a diesel. Could not beat the price of the Titan
. And at the end of the day your not driving around a big heavy truck when you don't need it.

What people are talking about is the lack of payload on the Titan diesels. You are probably overweight pulling a 7000 lb. travel trailer.

I'm ready ready ready for a diesel. Will look at all four when the time comes. It will be decided by price. Not make.
Currently pulling 9,000 lb with a 2006 gas 5.6.
Keeps up with ecoboost and ford diesel. ( see picture).
I really like the Nissan diesel but if I had to buy tomorrow. I think the price would have to be really really good, torque is so much lower than big three. I'm hoping that will get increased in next years model. Let's face it 500 vs. 700 to 900 when making the leap. Is something that separates the four.
So I'm partial to Nissan and think I'll wait. Just my opinionClick image for larger version

With my 2017 Titan 1/2 ton gas 5.6L, the GVWR is 7,300 lbs. With my 6,500 lb TT hooked up, the truck weighs 7,120 lbs. So the Titan XD with a GVWR in excess of 8,000 lbs would have no problem safely handling a 7,000 lb TT. Remember the XD is built on a heavy duty frame unlike the regular Titan.

First of all, I have to say that you are well over the capacity of your Titan in pulling a 9,000 lb TT. You're definitely in the HD category for Tow Vehicles. The Titan XD would be very much cheaper than any of big three's HD models and remember that the XD is built on a HD frame so that it would handle your TT safely

You're talking about gvwr and the others are talking about cargo capacity. That's the number they suspect you are going over.

I specifically mentioned the diesel payload being overweight towing a 7K TT, not sure what yours is but you are mostly likely good.

And the salesman probably told him he could tow over 11K.

When I weighed my truck with the TT attached, the weight included 2 adults and 1 dog (total = 400 lbs)+ a full tank of fuel (95 litres * 1.638 lbs = 156 lbs)+ tongue weight of TT. Prior to attaching the TT, I weighed the truck (with the 2 adults + 1 dog + full tank of fuel) and the weight was 6,490 lbs. The difference between 7,120 and 6,490 would equal the tongue weight of TT. So how can you say that I'm going over ????

If you're referring to my Titan, if the salesman would of told me that I can tow 11,000 lbs with my truck, I would have told him that he was crazy
