Smile Nissan Frontier TV

Has anyone had any experience towing with a Nissan Frontier V-6 w/tow package?
We've had years of experience with big 5th wheels using a Ford F-450 power stroke and full timed in a 40' motor home, but we want to make short trips, (1-3 weeks) in a much downsized RV trailer. We've selected the Rockwood Mini Lite 2304ks, weighing in at 4200lbs dry. As suggested, I've read the towing guide and a lot of Forum posts. The truck appears to be well within limits (6300# etc.) and am planning to use a high quality WDH, but some input and experience from trailer owners would be helpful. Thanks

What is your payload capacity. That is almost always the limiting factor.

We're towing a Coachmen 17FQ with our '15 V6 Frontier. Trailer dry weight is 2700 with a max loaded weight of 3500. I find that going up grades or with a headwind we seem to struggle. Mind you we live at 6500' elevation and go over 10,000' passes at times.

With the tow rating I had thought it would pull better than it does. But I suspect the tow rating is about stopping a certain amount of weight - not getting it going. The altitude here really effects any non-turbocharged engine. If you're at lower elevation and aren't looking to be driving in the mountains it may suit your needs. I like the Frontier's size and price. Just wish I could throw a turbo or supercharger in it.

You need a 1 ton diesel dually to tow anything over1000 pounds. That's been my experience on here so far! All joking aside If it's within your payload capacities it should be fine.

I pulled a 2104S for a year, about 6,000 miles. Most of the time it was okay, but whenever pulling in to fairly strong headwinds it really struggled, and I don't like running 4 or 5,000 rpm. I bought a F150 Ecoboost and am much happier.

If you're in the flat midwest, you may be OK. I wouldn't want to pull a 2304KS with it myself. I pulled my 2503S one season (I'm in the midwest) with my 2009 5.3L V8 Silverado (7500 lb tow rating, 1511 lb payload). It was OK, but I wouldn't have wanted to go into the mountains with it. When it had some mechanical issues, I used that as an opportunity to get a 2500HD.

As Bob said, what's your payload? Should be on a sticker on the drivers door frame.

My 2015 brochure says your dry weight is 4155 lbs and cargo is 809 lbs, for a total GVWR of 4964 lbs. That could make your tongue weight as high a 745 lbs, plus 50-75 lbs for the WDH, or say, 800 lbs. Subtract 800 lbs from whatever the payload is on the drivers door frame and what's left is what you can put in the truck, including wife, kids, dogs, stuff, etc. Whatever's left (if anything) is "margin."

Thanks for the info. I'll check on the payload number. It is my sons' truck. He's buying a new truck and I'd get his (pristine condition) for tradein value. But its not worth it if it doesn't work. I'll post the payload number soon.

Yes, the payload is often the defining limits as to what you can (or should) tow.
I have an f150 supercrew 4x4 with the ecoboost and if towed, what it says I can tow I would be way over my payload.. Actually I am towing only about 60% of my tow limit and I'm near my my cargo capacity.

Payload vs towing capacities

After finding the payload limit on the Nissan Frontier V-6, I calculated we would be at the 90-95% payload limit with a relatively lightly loaded Rockwood Mini Lite 2304ks, DW and me and a few other incidentals and at about 70% towing capacity. Makes me wonder why the manufacturers don't pay more attention to payload. Because as all of you have said, you generally run out of payload, before you reach your towing capacity. Thanks for all of your help.

I had a Frontier and upgraded to an F-150 Ecoboost. My rv is a Rockwood mini lite 2306. The Frontier would move it, but it was not a comfortable drive. Even though I kept weights well below specs, the frontal area of the rv was a killer. I towed a micro travel trailer with the Frontier, and it did great. It probably had 10-12 sq. Ft. less surface area.

Thanks for that info. I was looking at the surface area of the the Mini Lite 2304ks and was concerned. How do you like your 2306?

Absolutely love it. Fourth RV, and it's one we see keeping for a long time.

If you'd be willing to consider something like an R-Pod the Frontier would be fine for that but I'll echo etothepii's comments about it pulling a 23' TT.

I used to pull a 23' Roo hybrid (5200# loaded) with a 4 dr. Tacoma TRD (4.0L V6) and felt the same as etothepii. In fact, I was well overweight with my family of 5 in the Tacoma so we always had to take our minivan along to avoid being overloaded and to improve its performance. I upgraded to the F-150 which worked really well for the Roo.

Don't think anyone in North America, would be towing a 5th wheel with a Nissan Frontier.
That would be considered too small of a tow vehicle, even for the smallest of American 5th wheels.

From what I’m seeing the Nissan load rating is maxed out with the trailer alone. Tow rating is over by 2400lbs. If this is accurate, don’t risk it. Just trying to be helpful.

Hello Forum

Thanky for the first answers.
I think, there are smaller 5th wheels wich can be pulled with a Nissan Frontier. Here in Europe we will get the Nissan Frontier (Navara) with a 2.5l Diesel Engine. It has alot of torque...

My 5th wheeler will ba parked on a Campground for 11 Months / Year. I will live in it with my DW. We will travel just 3 - 4 weeks a year with it. That means i will also use the towing vehicle everyday for my way to work. Thats why i would like to have a small Truck as possible.

I would also like the Dodge Ram 1500, but it's thirsty...

Someone here know a Nissan Frontier owner or can tell me a Company wich mounts 5th wheel hitches in a Nissan Frontier?

Thank you.

I’m not familiar with the Nissan Navara but I was able to find a brochure on the European version that says it can tow up to 3500 kg (7700#) and has a payload of about 1050 kg (2310#). I don’t think the Nissan Frontier is rated with that much payload and I’d be very surprised if someone on this side of the Atlantic has installed a fifth wheel hitch in a Frontier.

What 5'ver do you have...

And what are the weight numbers on it?

As for 5'ver hitches...I don't think there is one made for the Frontier as it really is not meant to be a 5th-wheeler hauler in the first place.
