AMEN!
Ran across a couple this past weekend who told me they never installed an aux. braking system on their previous toad - nor an emergency brake system - because "it didn't weigh enough."
My only thought was, "People, you don't have enough money!"

Yes, people, PLEASE check your break away systems. Mine for my toad is attached to my frame, not my receiver!

Hwy 150 appears to be a standard 2 lane (possibly 4 lane) non-divided highway. If the SUV had been right by the truck when the RV came loose, whether the RV's brakes applied or not would have been essentially immaterial. Even if the SUV was further away, and the brakes worked, the RV would have taken at least 100 ft, and probably more, to stop on it's own.

Sorry to hear of this tragic accident..............
not only for the family but the TV driver has to live with it as well.
A break away cable should NEVER be hooked to a receiver, that's basic towing 101. There most certainly were several failures that caused this happened, not just one. Do I know the actual facts? I do not. I have personally seen this same style of accident once, in person minutes after it happened and it still bothers me of what the final verdict was. Guy didn't hook up his safety chains, he thought his buddy did and his buddy thought he did. Came unhooked, travelled across the road into oncoming traffic, killed a lady and injured her young daughter. Guy received some fines, no jail time, and the victims family was left with a tragic loss over laziness/negligence.

The point I make is, with just a few minutes dedicated each time you plan to enter a roadway to check all of your equipment, and systems (even if your truck and trailer are brand new) you can 100% avoid this accident.

Maybe maybe not, .... things do fail. I have seen the receiver or the hitch fail. Granted Humans fail most often. Safety chains are hooked to the receiver so I have seen many / most also hook their break away cable their too. TV frame is the best. Not all states require break away devices and / or it depends on trailer weight.

Triple check all your equipment, slow down, and just be a safe / responsible RVer!

Does not matter if your going five miles or 500 miles !

RVs are not designed for speed, if your in that much of a hurry take your other vehicle or fly !

Most importantly think about the lives of your family, and the lives of the other families sharing the roadway with you!

I worry about the way FR has put my chains on. just weld one link underside. That weld is the weak link now it has been heated. Cant cross them. Take a look at the Power company trailers, or Ma Bell.

Well, on a lighter note; I recall the time many years ago that my grandpa lost his powerboat when it slid off the trailer and landed on a busy 4-6 lane street. Fortunatel no one was injured. He then tried to jack it back up onto the trailer and put a hole thru the boat.....

I hope they tell what was the determined cause of the camper becoming disconnected so that others that tow will know what to watch for. Say for instance a weld broke. Who actually inspects the welds before hitting the road.

Reminds me of the time I witnessed a head-on between a car and a dump truck. The car was swerving across both lanes, the truck had pulled completely off the road and stopped against the edge of the field which was 3 ft higher than the road. The newspapers and tv reporters said the truck struck the car, killing the driver. It was never retracted. The 2 guys in the truck jumped out to give aid but was too late. Volunteer EMT was behind me. I believe the driver of the car was semi-conscious since about a mile back.

How to test your breakaway system

https://www.etrailer.com/faq-tb-11-0...ay-system.aspx

I will do this the next time I hook up.

Hitch up, pull the break away pin and attempt to move the trailer.

One killed, three injured after bad crash in Lincoln County

My TT's brakes can't/don't lock up. There isn't anything wrong with them, they are just undersized for the trailer. (No shock there.) My TT has a GVWR of 10,500 lbs and has 5,200 lbs axles. The brakes are 12" drum and the trailer is one year old. Just more skimping by on the manufacturer's part.

It takes a lot of brake to lock up a good tire in good contact with asphalt... with that much weight pressing down on it.

This happened less than 20 miles from my house and is a 2 lane highway that is straight. Local news is not reporting what happened yet. The 6 month old baby is fighting for its life.

We are newbies and we double and triple check everything. It scares the daylights out of me now when we are driving with people cutting in front of us, going across two lanes of traffic to an exit, and us not knowing if we are going to be able to stop. While we drive slower, we're trying to be safe ... for everyone.

My prayers are with both families involved in this horrible accident. Their lives are forever changed. It was also reported on the local news that there were 4 camper accidents in central KY in one week. Be safe everyone as summer vacations are here and people are not always paying attention.

Very tragic and I am pretty new to hauling a TT too. The break away device is the wire wrapped around my electrical plug correct? I always hook it to the receiver. Assuming that is the break away safety device I truly did not know it was that. I thought it was to support your electrical cord from dragging the ground or something. I always check and triple check all connections and lights before pulling.

Yes I will. We are actually going camping next weekend and I will post a picture. Its loosely wrapped around my power plug cable which was how the dealer actually hooked me up for the first time. Assuming now after researching the emergency brake system that may be wrong.

Break away cable

Hey guys, my break away cable is just a bit too short for me, where can I go to get a replacement cable that is longer than the factory version?

Get yourself one of these.

My receiver is bolted to the frame of the truck, why wouldn't I clip the breakaway cable to that? That's where the chains hook up too.

If the receiver breaks away somehow the brakes will never get activated as the hitch is going bye bye with the trailer. Hook it to the vehicle.
