Over height on fifth wheel

Look up 11’8” bridge on utube. After watching a few dozen a/c units skimmed off of rv’s you will only by fuel at truck stops on when your trailer is unhitched . Very fun vids to watch .

My trailer A/C is 13'6", and the additional antenna's are just under 14'. As far as I can tell, we have never scraped anything. If you are on a main route, clearance will be listed.

The issue concerned Good Sam Enterprises/Camping World/Gander Outdoors (the Marcus Lemonis organizations), not Sam's Club, and resulted in a dispute that Pilot FlyingJ now has with TSD Logistics fuel program.


In addition to Love's, the EFS fuel card is also accepted by TA/Petro and at least one other (western US?) chain that I am not familiar with.

You can go higher than 13 6 but you have to have a permit. They make 3 styles of hitches high profile mid profile and a low profile. Need to know which one is on the truck. The sales person of the hitch does not care they just want to sell

I have a new 2020 3500 Silverado, the hitch on the 2012 was a B&W. I brought a base for the new truck, B&W. It’s sitting at the lowest setting, any lower and the pin box might hit the truck rails. Like some said on here I’m not going to worry about a inch and a half. I live in North Carolina, state law is 13ft 6 inches. There is no Federal law on height.

I live in North Carolina and my truck is stock, no air bags and the tires that came on truck. We travel everywhere. I have had to turn around because of low bridges with old truck. Taking the scenic route, I took the wrong way the other day and wife got all upset, didn’t bother me at all, I just made a u-turn, it wasn’t the first time.

In the United States there is a Federal Law of Height of 13’ 6” but it’s not me and I have no dog in this race.

Once again, there is no federal law on height. Each state has its own. Most states are either 13'6" or 14'. There are a few exceptions. Alaska is 15'.
And if your RV is 2" over, who is going to stop and measure you? Just watch the height signage on bridges. Easy.

It’s the nicest truck I have ever owned, it going to take me sometime to figure everything out. I don’t think I will ever get the fuel mileage I was getting on the 2012. I guess I should have got a 2019. I needed more room, maybe the fuel mileage will get a little better once the motor is broken in.

I don't own the same truck but on this last one, the mileage really didn't start to improve until about 12k. Big difference after somewhere around that mark.

Folks, NMWildcat is correct. Re-read his post, it's the law, and it's correct. Here is the citation if you want to read the source document (don't worry, it's short and written in simple to understand language). It is:


Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), 23 CFR Part 658

This regulation is for Commercial Motor Vehicles but specifically mentions Recreational Vehicles.


Two quotes there to be helpful:


"There is no Federal vehicle height requirement for CMVs. Thus, States may set their own height restrictions. Most height limits range from 13 feet, 6 inches (4.11 meters) to 14 feet (4.27 meters), with exceptions granted for lower clearance on particular roads."


and


"Recreational vehicles are not CMVs subject to Federal size regulation."

That low hanging tree branch in the campground doesn’t care about any laws. That’ll be the first thing you’ll hit. Not a bridge. Before we moved to a 5er last year I never worried about out TT’s height. We camp often in Provincial Parks in forested areas and I get a bit paranoid about low hanging branches now.

The chances of an issue on major roadways are slim to none but campgrounds are a different issue.

We had a guy completely pull off his front A/C a couple weeks ago on a low hanging wire at this campground. Not a good way for him to start the day and the power was out for several hours for the rest of us.
