Overall fuel economy towing with a F250/350 6.2L Gas

For those who might be interested in the real world fuel economy of the F250/350 6.2L gas engine while towing.... I recently completed the first road / hunting trip with my 2011 F250 and I was pleased with the performance of the truck. I put on about 1200kms of the most demanding miles and the overall fuel economy for the trip was at 32LPH (7.5-8mpg)with the truck and trailer fully loaded. This would not be a good overall average in most cases but I intentionally put the truck through it's paces to see what the worst case scenario would be. The truck had no issues maintaining 100-110kmph at about 4500rpm on the Coquihalla hwy which really tanked my overall LPH, but it towed like a dream on the long hills. It certainly can't be compared to a new Diesel, but overall a very capable TV.

As a direct comparison my buddies 2017 F350 with the 6.2 pulling very close to the same weight (with the only difference being 3:73 gearing) made the same average fuel economy.. At the pumps we pretty much used the same amount of fuel..

The only difference between the two trucks while towing was a little less gear hunting on the hills with the 4:30's.

So far my unloaded instant average at 110 kmph is about 18-19 LPH (12.5-13mg)and bounces between 16-18 (13-14mpg) at 80 kmph. Overall mixed driving (empty) has bounced between 21-23 LPH (10-11.5mpg) depending on the amount of in town driving I do.

My buddies 2017 with the 3:73's definitely does better when running empty. He is averaging 16 lph+- (14.5+-mpg) at 110 and 14 lph+- (16+-mpg)at 80 KMPH.

Hope this helps someone...

I get 7.5 to 8 mpg at 65, flat interstates. Georgia, North Carolina mountains around 6.5. Around 14 mpg non towing. 6.2 with 3:73.

To the OP ... that's about the average for a gasser ... glad your pleased.
To the reply ... "Just makes me glad I have a diesel " ... "I'm there with ya"
This isn't a "my truck's better than yours" response by any stretch of the imagination. I just prefer diesels.

So the question is what does an F-250 diesel get for actual mileage towing a 10,000 lb trailer given an 18% premium for diesel fuel and a fairly significant hit on acquisition cost for the diesel engine?

Answer to Trawlerphil ... gasser people have their own needs and uses for their truck. Diesel owners enjoy the ground pounding, stump pulling raw torque of a diesel that makes women scream, children cry, dogs howl, and heavy loads cower in the shadows. Considering the above ... added cost of fuel and added cost of the engine is virtually irrelevant to most diesel owners. Engine longevity and resale value tends to even the scales on your argument. Like Grandpa said ... you can never have too much truck.

OUCH....The gas (V10) MH in our signature gets 7.7mpg without a toad & 7.04 with a toad. Our rear end gearing is 6.17. Towing Weight total 28,385lbs.

In all honesty, I would have bought a 7.3 if Ford didn't stop making them in 2002, but the diesel nightmares since then combined with the USA discriminating against diesels with absurd emissions regulations pushed me into the gasser camp even though I put 350,000 miles on my 300SD and loved it.

Evidently the diesel guy's failed to learn how to read in school.
The OP has the word GAS right in the title . What are you guys doing here anyway?
Oh yeah, just want to tell everybody how you have a big diesel TV.
Really???

I was just agreeing on spock123's comment. I you can also read ... I was polite in my first responses last sentence. Like said ... this is a gasser thread to start with, so I'll exit out of here.

Just the norm with some of the big 'D'iesel crowd. Very few owners can actually get the value back after purchasing one anymore so they jump all over the fuel mileage and chest pound about whatever, whenever they can. They must need to convince themselves with brainwashing repetition how the extra spent money puts hair on their chest or something abstract because it sure ain't putting money in their pocket.

Thanks for the info mikakuja...I just purchased a new gasser and feel damn good about it, especially seeing all the fleets switching from diesel to gas.

Fuel mileage while towing? I never check...fill up truck, hitch up camper, go camping, have lots of fun, fill up truck when gas gauge approaches 1/4...repeat

I was hoping for 10+ while towing. Doesn't look like that will happen. I need a long trip to figure out exactly, but I do know it will be south of 10. I tow probably 6,200 lbs so not that big of a challenge. I have a 3.7l six in gmc 1500 and put 4.10 gears in rear axle to make it passable TV. The '95 truck works fine now. I does get 16-18 mpg otherwise.

I also have an F-250 Lariat 6.2 and love it tows our 40' 5er with no issues been to Tucson Falgstaff Florida Keys. All around Southern Texas and getting about the same mileage mentioned in the original post on this thread. I have been a mechanic for over 40 years working on Deisels Gas and even propane powered motor vehicles. I like the deisel but can't justify the additional costs of a deisel. Especially when the 6.2 performs so well for our needs.

I had a MH on a workhorse chassis and 8.1 gas engine, towing a Suzuki, and averaged 7.12 mph over the ten years and 80,000 miles.

Now two a 40' Primetime Sanibel at about 16,000 lbs with a Chev. 3500HD diesel dually and average 11.7 towing. rarely go over 60 because I don't; what a problem if I have to jam on the brakes to stop the dam thing. At 11.7. I feel like I have died and gone to heaven!

If you are referring to the 5er its a 2015 Forest River Crusader 39 ft.6 in. Weight approx 14000lbs. Truck has a 6sp auto .ost times in 5th or 6th ln occasion doen to 3rd on the big hills maintains at least 50mph on those long steep grades. Engine doesnt even sound like its working. Matter of fact on one of our trips to Tucson a late model 2500 dodge Cummins played tag for about 30 miles up and down the grades we would pass and tail each other until he finally pulled off on one of the exits

If it makes you feel better... I get 6.5 mpg towing a 10k 5er with a F-250 5.4 gasser... So your bigger motor gets better gas mileage

OMG! How did you not burst into flames?

The stress! The horror! The lack of little kids running in fear! Dogs howling and such ...You can't possibly survive pulling that load without a diesel.

What blood pressure medication makes this possible?
