Painted steelies black, I like it

I have the stock 18" steelies on my truck painted silver. I painted them with black plastidip last year and that all peeled off. But I still liked the look of black wheels on my white truck. I went looking for new wheels and the ones I liked were $340 each. So I got 2 cans of rattle can paint and went at them. I like them now. The plastidip was too flat for my taste. I like this semi gloss and with the flat black center caps, they really pop well.

In a way, I am proud of my steelies because they are the strongest wheel of them all (I have no idea if they really are, but I heard that once).

So for $10, I think this will do just fine.

The last pic is my plan to get an extra 100hp and torques from the truck. I figure if I add ///M and AMG badges, it will go faster.

My son used Dupli-Color black wheel paint and finished with their clear coat on his Mazda 3. Turned out fantastic and I am going to do that to my 2500 truck.

I like that look too. Don't know what brand of paint you used, but I have had very good luck with Krylon on a number of indoor and outdoor projects. It seems to dry faster that Rustoleum, which is also good paint. Rattle can paint has come a long way over the years.... Very nice truck, BTW.

I guess you could call me old fashioned. I don't spend much time looking at my truck and certainly don't feel like spending money (or much effort beyond washing) making it look good for others. I just drive it and performance/comfort are all that's important to me.

I have to admit that the OP's wheels do look good on his truck and that's his choice.

I’m not a chrome guy whatsoever. And nothing looks better on a white truck than black or dark grey wheels.

Great job! Looks awesome.

Looks like someone stole your wheel covers. Looks horrible. (Yeah, it's generational for sure.)

The Police Interceptor badges I put on my Explorer dramatically improved the engine's power.

I did crank on the front torsion bars to get some of that rake out. Looks like a cat in heat. I had put drop shackles on the back to level the truck and dropped the front down a skosh to keep the headlights pointed at earth. When I removed the drop shackles, I never adjusted the front end back up. Still not close to level, but now I look like a regular cat when you scratch their butt vs. one in heat.

Same…never been a fan of it but unfortunately the 2500 Ram Bighorn that I bought has the chrome package. I’m slowly deleting that and I’m 51 years old [emoji23]

What did you do to prep the wheels before painting?

The wheels were in perfect shape so I cleaned them and then sanded with 400 grit to knock off the shine. Then denatured alcohol. I used playing cards inserted between the rim and tires to keep the tires from getting paint on them. Then 3 coats of semi-gloss black Rustoleum.

In regard to the plastic-dip. That coating is made to be pealed off if you wanted to take it off. It was originally for tool handles, but, has lots of uses in addition to that. But, that is why it pealed off - it's supposed to be able to do that.

Didn't like the 22's that came on the wive's truck so I swapped them for a set of 20's which what is the door sticker / build sheet list.
