My new 5.0 Cummins will rarely pull over 2000 RPMs. This summer I have been averaging 10.5.Our big test will be Washington DC and the Cumberland Gap. A fellow pulled a 10,000 camper with the 5.0 Cummins through the Cumberland gap and claimed 9 mpg. Running 65 - 70mpg. We'll see if we can do as well.
It's not the pulling power Dude, it's the braking power. I had a 2013 F150 3.5 ECCO Boost and a 9000# trailer. It would have pulled two trailers but was short on braking. Your Cummins does not have an exhaust brake. Be careful out there.

Here's a pic of my onboard trip computer after a "real world" 6400 mile trip. Pulled a 40ft 5th wheel (13,900lbs) from Dallas up through Rushmore, Glacier, Yellowstone, Utah, CO. Averaged right at 11mph.

It’s not the job of the truck’s brakes to stop the trailer. I’m not sure why people blame the truck for poor braking with a trailer in tow, if they have braking problems then it’s time to ensure the trailer brakes are properly adjusted and the brake controller is functioning properly.

Excessive braking on long downhill grades means you should probably slow down. Relying on an exhaust brake to prevent cooking the brakes tells me something isn’t right with the setup or the driving style.

11 MPH is really slow. Maybe you should boost it up to at least 25.

LOL - ya, that would have taken me way more than 150hrs of driving to cover 6400 miles. I'd hope I would have gotten more than 11mpg at 11mph. :signhavef un:

That's a really small Cummins. Did not know they made one that small. Does it have an exhaust brake and turbo?

On long 20+ mile downgrades from Yosemite and other Colorado and Wyoming passes one tends to overheat brakes on both trailer and truck. That's when the Exhaust Brake is really the best thing since canned Beer. Try it you will like it!

As you know downshifting for braking in a diesel is worthless without an exhaust brake or Pac valve.

What’s a really small Cummins? Are you referring to the Duramax in my truck? Yes, actually, it does have an exhaust brake and a turbo. It’s also my 5th diesel and the smallest I’ve owned. Had a 5.9 Cummins, 6.6 Duramax, 6.7 Cummins, and an 8.3 Cummins.

BTW, Cummins has made 4cyl diesels for a long time. Their new 2.8 crate engine has become quite popular for folks repowering older Jeeps and other off-road vehicles.

I’ve towed many a thing with both gas and diesel trucks, with and without exhaust brakes, up and down many hills. We’ve survived without cooking brakes without having exhaust brakes for many years by not speeding down hills with heavy trailers. We’ve learned that it’s not wise to let the truck speed up and then ride the brakes all the way down.

The point remains. The truck’s brakes are not meant to slow the trailer, if you’re having braking problems then its either a system or driving style problem. You don’t need an exhaust brake to safely descend a long grade without cooking the brakes. Yes, it makes things much nicer if you have one, but look at how many people don’t have one and aren’t having problems overheating the brakes.

This made me laugh. At a rest stop recently off Interstate 40. I think only 1 Forest River (mine with the white Ram) but a lot of towing variety! Click image for larger version

Good looking setup! One word of advice, I would re-setup your hitch. Your truck looks pretty good but the trailer is too low in the front and needs to be raised (Raise the ball on the shank if possible or you may need a different shank).

The trailer should be level or barely nose-down, yours is extreme.

Just my $0.02, didn't mean to hijack the thread. Welcome aboard!

Before making any changes I'd make sure the trailer and tow vehicle are pretty much loaded the way you'll be traveling most of the time.

In my trailer the bulk of the storage is just behind the rear axle and water tank just ahead. If you have batteries, propane, water, ahead of the axle and nothing in storage behind the axle you can have a somewhat nose heavy situation.

Put a weeks worth of beverages, canned goods, and all the other goodies that add up, in the storage behind the axle and some of that nose down situation may solve itself.

It may be just my eye but it looks like the rear of your tow vehicle is down somewhat so you may need to adjust the angle of your hitch or take up another link on your WD bars.

If both TV and TT aren't loaded the way you travel you can find yourself locked in an endless loop, chasing adjustments on the WDH.

Hey Brendon, looks good. Any issues with that SB truck and the non slider hitch? Thinking of a new truck myself with SB and 5th wheel puck system. My current pull-right slider wouldn't fit the new truck mounts.
