Truthfully not much more than some 1500 trucks. My co worker has a Honda pilot that has 400 pounds more the another one's f150 platinum. Not that I would want that van but if that it what you have and you camp near home than it is what it is. It is sad that that sienna has the pay load of a half ton.

I struggle to believe he's under payload. *Maybe* under on towing (the 3500#).
I (personally) would be more ok going over on a pickup than a front drive van.

I don't disagree with "use what ya got", but seems like constant trans problems to me. I have a smaller (I think) trailer and a 3/4 ton, so I'm the opposite end of the spectrum. Mine sucks for daily driver on some of our roads though.....

his old TT's DRY weight is 3,957 lbs. GVWR is 5,859 lbs. So he's certainly over his tow capacity before he even loads it.

13% of GVWR is 761 lbs. He has a WDH, so I'd guess his tongue weight would be around 840 lbs or so. I'm guessing he's got a DW and at least 2 kids.

I doubt the new TT is any better; and the kids are bigger.

I don't agree with the first part of his avatar, but the 2nd part is definitely correct: "I'm not crazy - My reality is just different than yours."

Glad it's not my wife and kids he's towing around. And I hope I never encounter him on the highway.

Definitely not double the tow capacity but it is over the tow capacity. I am well under the GAW for front and back axles.

The numbers for the 2014 (old) trailer were just a shade under 4600 lbs loaded for a trip and the TW was around 560 lbs. That trailer was a 90" wide model.
The numbers for the 2018 (new) trailer is at 5300 lbs loaded for a long (3 week) trip and the TW is around 625 lbs.

All of our tanks are empty when we travel and we carry minimal gear.

This June will be 28 years of camping in trailers and towing with cars or vans what most people would feel is undersized. We started with a 10 ft pop-up in 1991 towing with Subaru Outback 4 cyl and 5 speed manual. Over the years we have progressed to larger trailers and larger tow vehicles to our current couples model trailer & Sienna van and it is just the wife and I now and our GSHP dog. Before last year our daughter came with us but she lives in the UK now as she is attending university there.

Our 2010 Sienna van had over 280K miles on it when we sold it to get our new van. We did approx 100K miles of actual towing with it and never an issue. We camp approximately 60-70 nights every year including a 2-3 week long trip with 5 other friends somewhere in Canada or US. Last year we all went to Florida for 3 weeks, the year before that we all went to the east coast of Canada and this summer we are all going to Colorado for 2 weeks, which will be our 3rd trip there over the years.

Check signature ... Tire upgrade biggest help... Tows great, the 2019 is much stronger and wheel base 4" longer bigger brakes more payload ... I am few lbs over on payload way under on max tow and GCWR .... I get a lot of grief because of payload and it is a 1/2 ton and I am OK with that .... we won't be in the mountains, 95% here in Florida .... there are so many variables to safe towing, I do everything I can to be safe and skip nothing plus 25 years of towing helps a lot .... Hope in 3 years when we both retire completely I will buy a 1 ton and see the country ... thanks for asking

Yes my next upgrade will be to 295/65r/20"tires rated at 4400 lbs to handle my fiver.

Its not for everyone that's for sure. Everyone needs to feel comfortable with what they use to tow with and what size of trailer they want to tow.

The main thing is proper set up regardless what you are using to tow with. I have been dealing with the same RV dealer for all of the years that I have been towing campers. They have been in business for just over 45 years now and sure know their stuff when it comes to set up and have been setting up all kinds of combinations.

Well, I technically towed it ... though not to a camping location. Getting it set up with the new truck. I wanted to adjust the WDH. Going from ~Denver to Moab in June and need to start prepping when I get time.

When I did my set-up, I found that the coupled trailer only raised the front of my truck just below 1/4". I scratched my head a bit pondering if that was even worth the effort ... does a 1/4" movement need to be countered with weight distribution? I already owned the WDH and I had all the tools out, so I did it. I brought the front back down 3/16" so that it was riding 1/16" higher than uncoupled. Bravo!

I did get lucky on the shank. For my F-150, the ball was at the highest vertical setting. I dropped it to the lowest vertical setting for the F-350 and worried that it would still be too high. When all hitched up, my trailer frame was within 1/8" front to back, with the nose owning that 1/8" difference. Definitely not enough rake to justify a new shank. Lucked out.
