Problems with adding tow mirrors to '15 chevy diesel

A warning for those with the newer (2015.5 duramax). So, I have not formally posted pics yet but, I did get the new TV. Picked it up last week, a 2015.5 2500 Chevy Duramax. Thing is a brute. This is kind of long, sorry...

Great truck only down side was that it had regular old mirrors on it, but they did power fold which was interesting. No problem, right? Dealership said they will swap out the mirrors for tow mirrors at no cost. Problem was GM says they will not sell the mirrors to them unless the mirrors came on a truck that way from the factory. So I call BS but the dealership orders aftermarket mirrors. I am fine with that, I would lose the power fold option but to me that is one more thing to go wrong. The first day the passenger mirror actually got stuck "in" and I needed to wiggle it loose so I am good without them.

So flash forward and they get the mirrors mounted, they look the same as the ones I had on my 1500 but they had a turn signal. No sooner do I get out of the parking space and a check engine light comes on!

Code reads for an outside air temp sensor code. Well turns out starting in 2015 1/2 Chevy now puts the temp sensor in the passenger side mirror instead of the grill (like the gas versions). They also say something for the exhaust brake may also be in the mirror... So now I have an issue, agreement was for tow mirrors as part of the deal.

Dealership is being great with all this, actually. They are working with aftermarket mirror people, GM (who still says they can not and do not make a camper mirror for the truck) and another brand of after market mirror who claims to include the sensor in the mirror.

SO if this is your situation, have them mount the mirrors before taking the truck... But I did, after a bit of Google-foo, find that shockingly I am not the only one in this boat and GM DOES make a camper mirror for my truck... Here are the part numbers for the 2015 mirrors:

23241467 And 23241465

The "67" one is the passenger side mirror and needs to be replaced (also in my case since I have the Diesel) with 23241469 which covered my particular RPO K40 code in the build sheet of my truck.

Obviously verify the numbers yourself but I had to GIVE THESE to the dealership since they did not even have them on their list of parts. Once all is said and done I will follow up with either the aftermarket company name of what mirrors I got or if I just go with the GM factory camper mirrors.

They are a $350 add on when you build your own, (Canadian) can't see why they would not be standard on a diesel though. I do wonder about the dealer saying GM would not sell them to him, all he needs to do is order them and if GM wants a vin number use one that has the mirrors.

Very few of the 2500 around here seem to have tow mirrors, even the Diesels. In the dealers defense (a bit) during my searching I found similar answers being given to numerous other dealers by GM saying they will not sell them unless they were on a truck purchased off the assembly line. Other dealerships could not even find a part number listed for the mirrors. Sometimes GM would claim they did not even make a tow mirror for my build codes... It was very strange.

As far as ordering.. I bought a truck off the lot and saved 12,000 over ordering. So yes I would have ordered tow mirrors but for the price, I'll take a bit of extra work that I never expected to encounter. I was lucky to get an LTZ for just a hair over the cost of an LT gasser... Diesels are fairly common around here but not THAT common so it had been sitting for a while.

My new F 250 when equipped with Brake Controller and tow package comes with Trailer mirrors standard. I looked on the lots of GM dealers and they all had the tow mirrors. I would check the rest of you package to make sure the Towing upgrades are included as well.

All Superduty trucks come standard with towing mirrors and have for a long time. Can't understand why the others didn't follow suit a long time ago.

I hoped you get this worked out. Certainly GM has a mirror that is made for your truck.

My 2015 Chevy 3500 came stock with tow mirrors. Pull to extend type-it is a dually, maybe that's the difference??

On my last Chevy I wanted a color matched grille instead of chrome. The dealer went on the lot got a Vin off of one that had the grille and ordered it.

It has all the towing parts, as did my 1500 but did not come with tow mirrors. Unfortunately they need to be added during the build, they are not standard. They do not even appear stock on the 3500 unless you get the WT version.

It is getting worked out... Problem with pulling the vin appears the ones that came with tow mirrors from the factory are wired / done differently than ones with regular mirrors. They still have the temp sensor in them if they are diesel (gas is not in the mirror).

My standard mirrors have a whole different build code even thought it is the same as one truck on the lot with tow mirrors (identical options minus color and 5" lift). Part numbers for the passenger tow mirror from the factory is different than the passenger part number with the regular mirrors from the factory even though both are diesel 2015.5's use the same mounts and same wiring connector.. No idea the difference but if I just swapped the tow mirrors off truck b to mine they say I would then get an exhaust brake failure code... No idea what that has anything to do with a mirror... They both are power folding, exhaust brake, tow controller build in with turn signal heat and marker lights...

But none the less the part numbers are listed above to hopefully safe someone else the grief or shock...

Little add on... Spoke to a ford service guy and they say they are doing the same thing come 2016/ 17 with the sensor in the mirror now for Diesels. Guess we will need to call and confirm before adding those new tow mirrors on to other trucks as well.

I do not think any of the options will extend to the tow position under power. In the few days I have power folding mirrors I found them to be a guarantee to break them. My current "temporary" tow mirrors fold in by pushing them back towards the rear of the truck. They will also fold in if struck... I know this first hand. I did not force them beyond my comfort level but the power folding mirrors needed to be folded in by the motor and had no give. This would have meant a new mirror when that duelly Dodge clipped me one day.

I just hope it saves someone the head ache if they buy like I did with an assumption... And maybe a solution when they do.

So stupid, anything to save a few dollars at the expense of the customer. I own HD2500, great power train, but some things I have found are really cheaply manufactured, should not be on a $50k truck

Yes I am sure I will discover that as time goes on. No one ever could tell me why they did this with JUST the Diesels. Best I could come up with was less engine heat to mess with the reading??

Local GM dealer did add tow, slide out signal light in large mirror to my truck as it also came with the small mirrors, mine is 2009, not had any problems with the mirrors themselves.

All this started in the 2015.5 trucks. prior to this the sensor was in the grill.. So I am told.

When I bought my 2009 2500HD, dealer told me they couldn't even get/install towing mirrors (wth). They were going to get them (and have them installed there) by the same place I was buying my Leer topper from. (Granted, this was in Alaska, but still, it's a TRUCK, an HD with a towing and snowplow package!!!)

I see Chevy trucks on the road every day with tow mirrors....we use Robot Check. They worked great for our Wildwood, not yet sure if I will need something different with the new TT, as it's much longer.
