Pulling a toad with a trailer??

Posing a question here. Has anyone pulled a toad (dinghy) that was pulling a small trailer (4'x6' maybe 500lbs gross). Just looking at possibilities, as I would be under length and weight. I know some states don't allow double tow and some states will allow 2 ball connections and some will only allow 1 (king pin/ball). How would a towbar/ball setup fit into this category? Towbar is a solid connection, is this considered "hitched" as with a ball connector?

Every state is different, You would need to check into your particular state codes for the correct info.

I realize every state is different, but that doesn't stop those that do it anyway and have for years. The "double tow" arguments have been around this forum for years, but I've never read about what I'm proposing. I'm basically testing the waters to see how others feel about it, and if they have done it, how did it act on the road.

I would personally never try it. A single pivot point is plenty.

Little confusing as I read it you are going to tow the toad with a trailer behind is this correct? If that's the case I would not do and you definitely would get the attention of the law. Later RJD

Shouldn't be a problem in any state that allows double towing as long as you are within the ratings of all tow hitches. This is the reason double towing with two ball hitches is seldom seen, but I see it all the time in Utah.

So.....you have a Georgetown like me with possibly a 5,000 towing hitch. This is all based on the F53 Ford chassis, motor, transmission etc.

What toad vehicle are you towing, that is pulling a trailer (500lbs gross according to you)?

What is being brought along that can be accommodated on such a lightweight trailer tha can’t be brought any other way?

Towing and towing is dangerous topic no matter what way you approach it, and there’s insurance companies that are just waiting to talk with you on this matter.

Just sayin’

As you mentioned, most double-towing allowed states require that the first trailer be a gooseneck or fifth wheel type. You would not be legal under such circumstances.

With the distance between the rear wheels of your coach to the hitch pivot, any sway in the small trailer would be amplified by the moment-arm of that distance imposing a steering action on the coach, that would then cause a sway response the other way in the trailer(s). You could enter a point where it becomes uncontrollable. Or as we electrical guys say, "High-gain positive feedback in a closed loop"

Thinking of hauling a golf cart and the Rubicon?

You might consider this style, since the trailer is fixed at two points on the toad and cannot sway independently of the toad. That means that actuating the toad brakes will also create a braking force in the trailer that is exactly in-line.

I like that. Is something like that legal in states that don't allow triple towing?

Thinking about hauling these. I’m not afraid of double towing and doubt that a small single axle trailer is gonna whip my Jeep around. Click image for larger version

Maybe this is a western states thing because the negative replies seem to be mid west and eastern states. Double towing is very common in Arizona, Nevada, Utah and in California with proper license and equipment.

When I had my class A my tow bar went directly into the receiver, no double ball issues. I have never double towed but as long as the Jeep tracks well I doubt that you will have any issues.

Pretty much what I'm thinking already. The Jeep tracks great, the little jeep is under 300lbs and the small aluminum trailers I'm looking at are in the 2-300lb range. The other aspect would be to load on a trailer and be overweight.

yes because legally its not a trailer. You don't even put plates on it!

Which is not to say a trooper won't pull you over thinking its a trailer.

I actually think they have to be licensed, at least in some states. I've looked into these before. It has a wheel touching the ground that has a mechanical connection to a vehicle.
