Purchased wrong tow vehicle

About a week ago I traded in my 2015 Tundra for the 2017 Ram 2500. Purchased a 5th wheel with dry weight of 13118 pounds thinking I was well within the capabilities of my new truck....well what I didn't realize was the the payload of my truck was 2,380 pounds and my unloaded hitch of my new Vengeance 377v was 2646😡. Of course RV dealer said I would have no problem but they were wrong. At that point I had already purchased both the truck and Toy hauler. Please make sure you know all numbers before you make same mistake I did!

Had the same problem last year this time. I traded my diesel 2500 for a dually diesel first, then ordered the trailer.

Is that trailer a toy hauler? What does adding 'toys' do to the hitch weight?

With that payload, diesel. Hemi Ram 2500 is around 3,000.

To OP, Air bag it and go. Lesson learned. You ain't the first, definitely not the last.

It is a toy hauler. We will be hauling to Harleys around 1500 pounds

yep, you will be no less than 1000 lbs over payload once loaded. It's an expensive lesson, but has happened to many

I just looked and realized my 2016 ram 2500 has 383 gears and a 12,500 towing capacity. Not the 15,500 of the 410 gears with the 6.4 liter motor.

My new 5th wheel is 11k pounds with a 2,300 pound pin weight. I would of rather had the larger buffer on both payload and tow capacity.

Wouldn't having 2 Harleys loaded behind axels lower the hitch weight? Or does it not work the same as a TT?

No. Just the Cummins (and emissions) weighs that much more than the Hemi.

Cummins equipped has ~800 lbs less payload than exact same Hemi Ram.

Yes and no. 1500 on the rear garage will probably only take 150 to 200 lbs off the pin if that much. Toyhaulers are designed to keep the trailer stable and not change weights greatly.

I have the 5.7 with about the same payload. The 6.4 gives another 1000#. I had to keep it light. That being said, you're in no different boat than a large percentage of people that intentionally run a 2500 diesel well over the GVWR.

It's a diesel, you won't lose that much. I had my last diesel truck, a 2014 Chevy 3500 for 2.5 years and only lost $7000. They don't drop like gas trucks.

That is why I found my trailer first and then purchased my truck. I went looking for greater than 1.5x tongue weight to allow loading and in case I decide to upgrade.

If I was in your shoes I would put airbags on it and go as was said by a previous poster.

Payload Payload Payload!

can't emphasize it enough.

nearly ALL tow vehicles will run out of payload, way before they reach towing max numbers.
