That still isn't bad mpgs pulling that much weight and running at 4,500 - 5,500 revs on hills. That is about what I would expect.

Maintenance costs?

Since I do not drive my 2009 2500 that far to work (15 mi. round trip) it doesn't accumulate that many miles in a year. It just rolled over 60k the other day. However when I retire that number will probably increase

I currently run Royal Purple synthetic in it and change once a year due to the lack of miles. With filter I have less than 50 bucks in the change. Since my service costs are way less than the diesel I will learn to deal with the cruise control issue.

What service cost are way more for a diesel? The 4 more quarts of oil? If you had a diesel, drove it the same as you do now, that annual oil change would be $20 higher. You'd probably actually save more in fuel to cover that extra $20.

I would love to hear your experience with the truck pulling your trailer and any issues you might have had. I'm upgrading from a Ford F150 because I would like a little more stability and power. My F150 has a 5.0L V8 and I'm pulling a 27 foot trailer that comes in close to 6,500 lbs. Any feedback you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I pull with a 2011 2500 HD 6.0L 4 wheel Drive, 3:73 rear... I have trailered a 25 Foot Sea Ray Dry weight 5600... Add trailer, gas, gear I estimate at about 8500 total.. No problem towing.... I have towed this boat over 3000 miles with no problem... I also tow a 30 ft travel trailer that is over 7000 loaded and have not had a problem towing this.. I have towed over the Cumberland Gap in Tennessee Interstate24 (Monteagle) .. I was able to maintain highway speed over the 7 miles of the climb... I have also towed over Fancy Gap in Virginai Interstate 77 without problem... Heavy duty tow package helps.. I also opted to purchase gas instead of Diesel because it did not make sense to spend 8-10 thousand more for the amount of towing that I do... If I were towing 10000 miles a year then the Diesel would have been my choice.... Also with the 3:73 rear I average around 10 towing and around 15-17 Highway empty if I stay 65 or under....Big difference with Stability and firmness of towing...

Right you are! ...had he gone diesel and kept it another decade he could have put historic/collector plates on the truck about the time he broke even at his use.

I drove a 2500 Suburban with that engine back in 2002. It was a beast! Drove like a Corvette.

I have a 2015 2500 hd 6.0 L and 4:10 rear end and pull a 7000 lb rockwood 2618 vs. I'm lucky to get 7 mpg pulling in Mo.. Last week I got 6mpg. 2400 mile round trip to Colorado this summer saw 8 mpg overall towing and unhooked. What am I doing wrong. I had hoped to average 8 in Missouri but I'm not. I use tow haul mode and set cruise to 66. Anyone find the "sweet spot"? What should I set the cruise to or should I not use the cruise?

I don’t use the cruise. That seems to help but honestly, I don’t think much about mileage while towing.

I have a F-250 with a 5.4... I'm getting 6.5 mpg pulling 9500 pounds
I get 10 empty in mixed driving
Oh yeah... 3.73 gears

The 410 is great for towing but hard on mpg. I get 10 towing 14,600# through the Smokies but with a 6.7 and a 3:55.

Obviously weight and air drag are the mpg killers, weight is what it is -considering the camper on diet is not going to shrink much on the belt line, going slower is your best control for better mpg numbers. According to the 'instant mpg display' for my combo 55mph is better than 65 (as expected) but I can't drive 55 long enough to prove it out with a tank of gas and hand calculations. When I was a younger man I drove cross country when the limit was 55. Man, it seemed like you could Fred Flinstone the vehicle to pick up speed. And out west in the flats...

It really comes down to the enjoyment factor .I like the way the diesel gets up to speed with out bouncing off the rev limiter in every gear .I also like the mileage and the way you can set the cruise and forget it the transmission will only downshift on the bigger hills and I like to be in control at that point anyway . Ive had all different types of trucks and I dont think I will ever go back to a gas truck but you never really know . I will however buy used trucks from now on. I dont like the way they rape us on new vehicles . The older I get the longer I hang onto things and the diesel engine seems to go about twice the mileage of a gas engine except Powerstrokes but thats a topic for another day . lol . Just my .02 I know my truck with good tuning will get 400 miles towing to a tank of gas which is good for a short bed. But to each is there own and some guys are diesel shy or dont feel like the extra expense is worth it and I get it .

I picked my truck as my daily driver with the option of towing a trailer someday, then someday came. Truck is 2016 Chev 1500 Double cab, 4x4 6.2 gas (420hp-460lb/ft) with 8 speed, 3.42 gears and tow package, rated at 11,800lbs towing. Trailer is XLR29HFS toy hauler TT, GVWR 9842lbs.(I use it all) My biggest trip so far was Toronto, Ontario to Bonneville Salt Flats at Utah/Nevada border due west of Salt Lake City. Drove approx. 65mph/2300rpm in tow mode (I don't use cruise control when towing). Trip was over 5000 miles round trip and I averaged 10.5 MPG (US gal) which is less than half the mileage I get unhitched. On open roads I had no complaints, just had to keep the fuel consumption in mind and plan fuel stops, in the mountains going downhill the braking was a beautiful thing, uphill out of Salt Lake City on 100 degree day, I just held it 4000 rpm(peak torque) engine temp only rose a few degrees. Sure there were diesels going passed but I hadn't signed up for mountain racing anyway. Worst part of my trip was the city traffic on unfamiliar roads with no co-pilot.
IMO this truck works great considering the trailering time vs daily driver time.
If I was to tow full time, especially in the mountains there are better trucks but for my purposes it gets the job done nicely.

I'm in a small rv resort and just walked around. Maybe because we are in the mountains but no Tts here, lots of MHs and 5ers. All 5ers pulled by diesel. 1 Chevy 2500, 2 gm 3500, 1 Ram 3500, 1 f250, and 4 F350.

Really appreciate everyone's feedback. Bought a 2015 Silverado 2500HD with only 17,000 miles on it and a gas engine. Very excited about this truck and can't wait to see how it pulls. Best part is it fits in my garage which is definitely a bonus.

I tow about 9000# tt and keeping speed to around 62mph gives about the best gas mileage with the 4:10 gear. I will average around 8.5mph and if I do get into some steep grades it will drop to 8mpg. Driving 65 and above will defiantly eat up gas mileage. Later RJD
