My rig is the same, and I pull it fine. But I'm thinking of moving up to a 2500. I am near my Max now.

Air bags will improve the ride, but not improve the CCC of the vehicle.

You Can Do It

I pull a Salem 27DBK with my 2017 GMC Sierra Crew Cab 4WD 1500 6.2 liter. Power wasn't an issue so much as was getting the weight distribution hitch dialed in. I also added Air Lift air ride to the rear (best thing you could do IMO). Picked up the trailer in OH and drove it back to Florida first trip. No issues. First maiden voyage went fine. Completely loaded with gear, wife, dog and the rest. As to upgrading....a 3/4 ton would probably be better but found no issues with what I have right now.

Best to base your weight calculations on the trailer GVW, not dry weight.

With that said, here are some actual numbers from my setup.

Advertised dry weight: 5645
Advertised tongue weight: 720
As delivered weight: 6052
Loaded actual weight: 6950
Trailer GVW: 7642
Actual tongue weight: 950

Observations on comments from others:

Ram 1500 or F-150 make better daily drivers than heavier trucks. Heavier trucks may have a higher cargo capacity.
My F-150 is stock with 20" wheels. No air bags or upgraded shocks. I have no complaints on towing. Rather than upgrade the truck, I spent the money on a ProPride hitch which I think is the safest available hitch. Lots of threads covering the "which hitch is best" discussion.

Since you are in Michigan, if you want a ProPride, you can save around $250 by picking it up in Davidson, just outside Flint.
