Oh sure, no doubt I could have a small commuter car, just not in the cards. I'd probably end up with a medium suv anyways being 6' 3". I do not know what the going rate is for a small suv, but my wife's was only 10 or 15 grand less than my diesel truck.

With your truck getting almost 20 mpg already it's not really worth it.

I want to upgrade to a F-250 (or Silverado 2500) to reduce the jerkiness caused by passing trucks and sometimes cars. The F-250 would also allow carrying more weight. My dilemma is should it be diesel or gas and what will the impact be on the range until the next fill-up.
Currently with our 36 gal tank and averaging 10 mpg we can easily cover our nominal distance of 275 miles between campgrounds without refueling. This allows us to stop at the interstate rest areas and avoid hunting for gas stops. Some rest areas are quite nice for walking the dog and a picnic lunch. If we get a 34 gallon gas F-250 I’m guessing mileage drops to 7 mpg which means refueling along the way. If we get diesel I’m guessing at least 10 mpg which avoids en route fill-ups. Note we normally do 60 mph.
So diesel would work except there is a complication. Being retired I no longer commute and now mostly use the truck for short trips around town. I use my wife’s Mini when parking is a problem but otherwise it’s the truck. This past year I clocked 10,000 miles total of which maybe 3,000 was trailering.
My concern is I don’t think a diesel would like the short trips around town where it barely gets warmed up. With gas we need en route fill-ups which is also undesirable. The third option is to do nothing and keep the F-150. By the way, we are going out west this season from Maryland and the F-250 definitely would be nice in the Grand Tetons, Bryce, and Grand Canyon, etc. Any thoughts how to solve my dilemma are appreciated.
Most diesels do not like short trips and they never get a chance to warm up. You will have more issues with it and the maintenance cost is a lot more than a gasser. The initial cost of 9 grand is a lot to recoup if you only travel towing 3000 miles a year. As mentioned if you are thinking of up grading to a larger trailer then ya maybe a diesels is the route to go. I just ordered a 3/4 ton Dodge ram with the 6.4 gas with 3:73 gear and will tow my 9000# tt very well. I do not use my truck much for local travel as I use my Volt which I can run 3 days on a charge. Later RJD

I heard they did away with those rebates. But no doubt electric will become king in the future.

And electric is made without cost, of course. LOL

To the question......my diesel dually gets driven short distances a lot, and long distances a lot, all the time. "Home on the Range", I get 600-700 miles before filling up. But at 35,000 miles I haven't noticed any issues with short trips. Sounds like an urban myth to me.

Yep cheap electric 4 cents per mile can't beat that. BTW I think GM met there alotment for electrics being sold which was 200,000 but that includes all GM lines. Later RJD

Thinking the same here. For me it's nor "range between fillups" but more like "range before emptying" (my bladder that is)

I get a good 100 miles or so before driving becomes uncomfortable. About the same for the dog too. Don't drive more than 300 miles or so in a single day anymore. There are plenty of fuel stops along the way so I utilize them for "full service".
