I’ve tried to cut zip ties that must have been rated higher than 15K! 🤣

Not crazy about the design either though.
Just another good reason to keep a fiver!
Regardless, it is a very poor design and I still wouldn't put it on my Cub Cadet.

Has anyone found a properly rated hook that fits securely on this hitch?

I do not want to add a go between part (shackle, quicklink, etc . . .), if at all possible. That seems like the only solutions that people are using.

NOTE: This does not apply to the 21-22K hitch.
Agree with the Chevy engineer getting hired by Ford. My Chevy has the same issue, and solved by buying a new clevis hook that has the wider throat and is rated higher at Tractor Supply (https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...n?cm_vc=-10005)

Would 1/2” shanks work. Will 3/4” shanks fit in this dumb hitch on 2017 F250?

I took my truck to the Tractor Supply store, and they were happy to allow me to take the hooks out into the parking lot and try them on the truck. No questions then.

I what I am asking, would 1/2” shank be strong enough, Tractor Supply doesn’t carry 3/4” shank but carry 1/2” shank

You need to look at the load rating.. It is usually stamped into the metal or part of the molding process.

I assure you that IF you ever have a situation where a coupler/hitch breaks and the rig depends on the safety chains and they break while twisted and IF your insurance company finds out- -they probably won't pay. @ "cub22908 the same goes for modifying the slot for the hooks. Any modification to a safety item will/can cancel your auto insurance in a heartbeat. "OldCoot" you are correct in that what is pictured is a terrible design and terrible safety feature.

The chains on both my landscape trailers fit fine. Maybe its an RV problem and not a truck problem.

Lord knows the RV manufacturers skimp anywhere they can.

When the HD trucks went to the 2 1/2" hitch, they enlarged the whole setup including the holes for the hooks. The RV industry has not changed to accommodate the larger setup.

You guys fussing about the truck hitches need to take a good look as to how your chains are attached to the trailer. Mine are bolted to the tongue with 3/8” grade 5 bolts using a flat washer to support the chains.

Didn't modify the hooks or slot at all. The thin non structural locking tab's sole purpose is to keep hook from bouncing off hitch. In a trailer separation it is all hook, that tab no matter what length wouldn't hold anything. I think you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. There is absolutely no way the locking tab is any less effective by being shortened a little bit. I won't argue at all with your statement the 3.5 inch hitch on the new Ford is a terrible design

Not all that many years ago, that locking tap on the hook....didn't even exist. Grinding a little off the end of that latch...changes nothing. No change to structural integrity in any way and the chain and hook are still able to support the load of the trailer.

What some people don't realize is, that is a typical design for a Class V hitch. My GMC Class V is very similar as are Chevy, Ford, or Dodge. There is always the option that if your trailer is light enough...drop down to a Class IV and your hooks will fit fine.

450 hitch is the larger version, not the 15K. Those holes are larger.

He has the larger 3" 22K hitch with larger holes.

The second picture shows that the hook will also not rotate down to a useful angle.

There are 2.5" and 3" version hitches. The 3" has no issue with chain holes. The 2.5" 15K version is the problem.
