Guaranteed that it has to regen because it still has a DPF unless you removed it and are running a tune. All diesel trucks since Jan 1 2007 require a DPF and as such have regen cycles.

Yep, regens are just less frequent and less severe. Thus the better mpg's.

I stand corrected. What I wanted to get across is during the regen the big blue cloud that once tailed me is no longer there and the smell is gone. Admittedly my choice of words was wrong.

If you had any smoke whatsoever during a regen then you had a cracked DPF. With 500k miles that wouldn’t be surprising, especially if the DPF was never replaced. They have an finite life before they become so full that regens are no longer effective and all the heat cycles can cause cracks in the substrate which allow smoke to pass through.

Quiet for a Diesel

I have a 2003 GMC 3500 6.6 L Turbo-diesel with 70K miles on it and it is just fine. I went to test drive a used Ford Larado that I ran away from as soon as I started it... my neighbors would have run me out of the neighborhood it was so noisy. My GMC has the sounds of a diesel, but is not "noisy". Lovin' it.

Since lots are talking about the GM LBZ diesel, I will show mine. Bought it new in 2006 and love it. The truck has been faithful to me and use it as a daily driver, towing 5th wheel and other trailers.

In stock form it would only puff black smoke if I baby it for awhile and then stomp on it. I now have a Garrett Stage 1 turbo, EFI Live and 4" exhaust with muffler. It will still put out a puff, but nothing more. The exhaust is not loud but you can hear the Stage 1 turbo spin up.

I also get ask if I want to sell my truck by random people. One day my wife drove it to move a desk out of her classroom and stopped by a store. When she walked out a guy was standing by the truck and ask if she wanted to sell it. Of course she said NO. I told her that it happens often.
