Silverado, Sierra spare tire removal

I got a flat tire on the way home from a successful antelope hunt this past weekend and the next morning I noticed I had a flat tire. Pretty annoying, but not a huge deal, it happens. I tried getting my spare tire down, but only the cable came down and not the tire. I never had this issue in the past, did some searching on YouTube and found this video that helped me get it down. Mine was not rusted like the one in the video, but it was filled with dirt that stopped the locking mechanism from releasing. Just want to share the video in case anyone else has the issue. I am definitely packing a large screwdriver with me from now on.

I've got into the habit of checking my spare tire's pressure regularly... ever since I had a rear tire blowout and discovered that my spare was the original tire from the factory and was so checked & dry on the sidewalls I was afraid to use it.


Checking my spare requires me to lower and then raise the spare... so I can keep things working properly back there. Actually found the remains of an old bird nest back there once.

My 2011 Traverse had a spare tire lock like this one. But my 2017 does not. I haven't checked my 2016 Silverado, but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't have one either. I'm suspecting GM isn't using them anymore, maybe for just this reason. Maybe someone else with a late model GM can comment.
