Smaller Truck To Tow My 5er?
Hey guys. I recently purchased me a new truck! Its a 2004 F-250, extended cab short bed. Its a sharp truck! Itd look good pulling my 5er... if it can safely. I bought a 5th wheel mostly because I had the truck to pull it with: A F-350 dually. It of course wasn't near as nice as this one so I traded it in.
I have another F-350 dually sitting here at the house, only problem is it needs an engine. Im wondering if id be better off fixing the dually and using it as a tow vehicle and just use the new truck as a daily driver.
What do you guys think?

What is the make model and year of your 5W and what are the specs on your new truck.

Hmm I thought I updated my signature. Ill try it again!
The truck is a 2004 F-250, V10, 4wd, extended cab short bed
The trailer is a 2003 FR Salem, 5er, 25 footer, single slide out. I believe it weighs in somewhere between 8-8500 lbs

I figured Id be ok. I was more concerned with sway. Since I have a few feet less bed, Id have to put the 5th wheel further back in the bed which will increase sway. Right?

I agree with your 5W being 25 foot long and about 8500 lbs you should be just fine. Remember if you have to get a hitch you will probably need a slider with that being a short box.

I have a B&W Companion non slider in a short box F250, it is set in the most forward position and I have no problems, in the back setting I would gain another 4", I have a contoured front cap so that helps, I looked up your model and it appears to be squared off, the redesigned Companion has more adjustment allowing it to be set another 4" farther back. The hitch has to be mounted right above the rear axle. Center above center or you will have real problems. If the front of the 5er is not one of the 90 degree turn styles ( I do not think so due to being a 2003 build 5er) a slider hitch is HIGHLY advised. Just my 2c.

Agree with Flying dutchman. Your 5er is fine with your truck. But you do need to be careful with the hitch. With the shortbed, I always recommend a slider hitch. Peace of mind. You may never need it, but if you do, you'll be glad you got it.
Oh, and your sway will be no different since the hitch will be mounted at the same relevant place in your truck...over (actually just ahead) of your rear axle. Sway with a 5th wheel is pretty much a non-event.

Iv got a suggestion! Since a slider hitch seems to be about double the price of a regular hitch, do they make an extended pin for a 5th wheel? Im not sure what the technical term is lol. Pin box? The big metal piece with the hitch pin on it lol.
I seem to recall seeing one once upon a time. I could be wrong! And this might not work or be unsafe lol

Might want to consider the Reese Sidewinder hitch.

The Reese Sidewinder is the best of both worlds. Standard hitch and no hassle with turns for a shortbed truck. Less weight, no extra strain on trailer as with an extended pin box...

By the time you spend the money for an extended pinbox like the sidewinder you might just as well buy a slider hitch. One way or the other they get your money.
