Thoughts on Trucks

Hey everyone,

Yesterday I drove a new 2018 Ford Crew Cab Lariat SRW, SB with all the toys but it was a 2500. Had 12000 miles. 2300 lbs payload.

I had just got out of my brothers 2018 Ram 3500 Crew Cab BigHorn, SRW, SB with the 6.4 Hemi. 4000 payload. 15000 miles.

Freakin two wonderful trucks, then an hour later jumped in my new 2018 Ram 3500 Crew Cab BigHorn SRW SB with the HO CTD 3700 lbs payload and 9000 miles.

The first two are definitely quieter while idling. But at speed I could tell little difference. I actually like hearing the CTD idle. But still the Ford sounds like a gas motor but you know it’s not when you step on it not that the Hemi is a sissy either.

I was also with two guys with Class A CDL’s, very experienced well respected trained diesel mechanics and now in charge of large trucking and transportation O&M.

IT IS CLEAR the Ford’s 2500 payload capability is not limited by the sticker on the door. I actually thought it rode a bit rougher. We were driving on muddy dirt roads.

All of us agreed that all the trucks are very nice. Discussed the Ford owner’s previous GMC 2009 Duramax and just in their opinion how they towed. I should have videoed the conversation.

The Ram Vs the Ford is just an intriguing comparison. They both end up at the same place but they feel very different in the execution. The Duramax is a great truck also, I just can’t get myself to really like the interior.

Confused by 2500 vs 3500 comparison

I appreciate this write up but admit I’m confused by the comparison between a 2500 and two 3500’s. I think I need a spreadsheet with all the data like prices, payloads, etc. to really have an option on these trucks.

Actually, it is. Whatever number is on that sticker is the max payload it is rated for.

Your not suggesting the new standard for payload calculation is how rough the vehicle rides are you?

How is it CLEAR that the Fords payload is not limited by the sticker on the door?

It absolutely is, regardless of how well it drives or not. It's up to the individual whether or not they live within those guidelines or exceed them. But, it is still limited to the sticker value, regardless of what we think.

Are you certain the Ford F-250 you drove was a gas motor? With that low of a payload it seems like it is a diesel.
I have a 2019 F250 Lariat Super Cab long bed that is loaded with everything but the full fancy camera package and I have a payload of 3100 lbs 6.2L gas.
I find it impossible that a quad cab with a short bed will have any less payload capacity then my truck.
.
Maybe I am just confused by your post.

All I know is that it makes no difference what manufacturer it is, all the new trucks have ridiculous price tags. Makes the choice easy. None of them!!!!

Ford, Chevy, Dodge...

Pick one...

The other two will tell you how crappy your choice is.

Yes the Ford was the 6.7 diesel and the Ram was the 6.4 Hemi. Haha no I’m not suggesting a new rough ridin standard. Might have to go back to a mule to win that one! There are 5 of us who have purchased new trucks in the last 6 months. Two Ford Power-strokes, One 6.2 gas, and One Ram Gas and one Ram CTD. All SWB, Crew Cabs XLT or Lariat for Ford and two Bighorns for the Ram. Rams were 3500’s and Fords are all F-250’s.

Not trying to start a weight war here just saying that in my opinion, the Ford 2500 diesels will tow anything my Ram CTD will and maybe more. It’s good to be able to drive them in succession. Ford makes one heck of a truck.

All fords diesels have the same motor, ram give less power in the 2500. I get what your saying. I would go 3500 for the price difference unless plates are way more.

I'm throwing this out....just for the fun of it.

I'm happy with my GMC 2500HD Duramax....and I'll just leave it at that.

So your saying the Ford F250 with the diesel and payload of 2,300 lbs can tow anything your RAM 3500 with 3,700 lbs payload can tow and maybe more ?

That's interesting how did you come up with that conclusion ? Your selling your RAM short

I have always been a GM guy. My brother, who runs the family farm, has always been Ford. My Nephews are Dodge guys. So we have lots of diversity on the farm. I will admit I love the Cummins. Just didn't like the Dodge looks or ride. Have never liked the overpriced Fords, especially interior and how they change drive trains all the time.

We were in Tubac AZ this weekend and I saw a 2018 diesel Dodge one ton long bed. Dark maroon with all the options. The snowbird was more than willing to let me look all around while explaining it all and how it performed pulling their 40' fiver. This was the first time I've seen a newer non GM truck that I would consider owning. Of course he didn't say how much he paid, but his wife let me know it wasn't far from the price of their home.

One of the things that steered me towards the cummins was the use of the CP3 pump vs the potential problematic cp4 pump. Theres a class action lawsuit against Bosh and Ford over the cp4 pump, Gm carries it as well, but ram stuck with the better built cp3 pump, UNTIL this year, the 2019's will have the cp4 pump and hopefully it has been updated. Other than that one feature I think all are similar and reliable.

Now how did you come up with that bit of knowledge! The internet?

The only HP/TQ difference between the 2500HD and 3500HD trucks with the Cummins engines is the DRW trucks equipped with the AISIN transmission with the 4:10 differential in the high out put verision. All of the other trucks use the same HP/TQ settings regardless if it is a 2500 or 3500 truck. The Cummins engine is the same engine in all of the Ram models just different software to increase HP/TQ Settings.

Its like any other truck you may buy. What ever options you put on the truck makes the difference on price and his Ram 3500 may not cost any more than a Chevy. I always order mine and get WHAT I want for options and also keeps the price down. Mine are stripped down versions either. Later RJD
