Tires for my Ram

I'm pushing 40,000 miles on my OEM truck tires. The outer duals are showing some wear. I can't say that I've been unhappy with tires on the truck - they're generally one thing that I'm oblivious to.

The stock tires are:
GENERAL AMERITRAC TR
On-/Off-Road All-Terrain
Size: LT235/80R17 120/117R E

A vast majority of my driving is highway miles pulling the camper. Second to that is going to be around town on-road. A very small portion is dirt roads in campgrounds. And a tiny portion is on grass (maybe or maybe not towing).

I don't go offroad nor do any beach driving.

Can anyone suggest a specific tire?

Michelin E rated LTX. Got mine at Costco.

I have the stock Firestone Transforce At's(33000 miles), I will be going to Michelin's next with maybe a look at the Nitto Crosstecs which I had on my old Armada and was happy with them,quiet,good in snow...

I run with the Michelins LT265/70R/17E M/S2 tires in the winter and I use an LT285/70R/17 126R Nitto Dura Grappler highway tread tire in the summer for pulling my 5er now.


I have always used Michelins on all of my vehicles until this year. I could not find a Michelin with a high enough load rating for my truck without going to an 18" or larger tire. So I went with the Nitto Dura Grapplers with a new set of rims.


I have never had any luck with factory OEM tires lasting for any mileage and riding decently. In fact my wife wore out a set of BF Goodrich tires on her VW TDI Jetta in less than 24,000 miles; she now has Michelin Defenders with a 90,000 mile warranty. Noise level and ride were a tremendous improvement over factory OEM's.

When I replaced my OEM tires with BF Goodrich A/T tires, I lost 1.5-2 MPG and a noisy/poor ride. I was shocked, I normally replace my tires every year just before our first big snow, whether they need it or not as it just makes me feel better. I usually use the best load rated Michelin that I can find, I am going back to Michelin's. JH

You cannot go wrong with the Michelin LTX2s. Best M&S all season E load tire out there. If $ is a factor, the Firestone Transforce HT is another great option.

I run the LTX AT2s which is Michelins AT tire. Quiet as a highway tire but better traction when needed.

I would go Michelin ltx ms2's like a few above said. best all around tire I have ever bought. don't get the at2's though they were brutal

The LTX-MS2 increased the sway on my rig when I was towing. They replaced Pirelli Scorpions. I do like the ride and handling without the trailer. Not a problem now as we went to a class A.

X2-They get good reviews on the RV.net forum. Have HT3 245/75R17 LRE E on mine for only 5,000 miles, Seems to be quieter and smoother on the road. Be aware that not all manufacturers have a mileage warranty on their tires. My OEM Firestone Transforce HT were a sorry tire and were down to the wear bars after 23,000 miles. Properly inflated at all times and wear was even across the tire.
