Titan with Ultra or Mini

My 1st post here so be easy on the rookie. LOL.

My wife LOVES the Rockwood 2612 and I am good with it. I rather have the Mini 2511 for the weight diff.

This is a can I tow question to those who know. I am an ex trucker (20 yrs ) and have seen many terrible wrecks with TT's. I don't wanna be one so I wanna do it right. I have put in calculators, etc don't wanna go max load as we plan to travel from NC to anywhere in the 49. My Titan will have to do for a year or 2.

My 2017 Titan gas CC 4x4 has following: 15300 gcwr, gvwr 7300, curb of 6060, payload 1610, tongue 924.

The Ultra is 6488 empty, 8738 gross, pin 750 empty.

The Mini 2511 is 5398 empty, 6798 gross, pin 700 empty.

Thanks in advance for all advice. I know the Mini will tow much better, 1000lb lighter and 4 ft shorter but I am sure we would not outgrow the Ultra. Just us empty nesters but could have kids and grandkids some.

I wouldn’t do either trailer if it were me. My reason is the payload of 1610 is low. By the time you load everything up in the truck, including people, the payload will be sucked up. To close for me. Your truck has plenty of power to pull either trailer, but the handling will be affected the closer you get to payload capacity. If you were only going to travel to a close campground now and then it might be okay, but not for traveling cross country.

I would do the mini 2511. Figure an extra 150# possibly on the tongue if you were fully loaded which would bring tongue to 850#. That leaves 750# for you, wife and gear.

Pin/tongue weight is the most underinflated figure in all of RVdom. You're going to most likely be well over 1000 pounds on pin weight by the time you're done loading up. The only half ton I'd even consider towing a trailer like this is a Ford F150 with the max tow and max payload packages. Best case scenario is you're going to be towing at the extreme limits of your vehicle. And that's usually not a comfortable place to be at in a half ton.

AlaskaErik is right about the under inflated tongue weight figures. My issue with 1/2 ton trucks and SUV’s are most are setup for comfort with soft suspension. The soft suspension doesn’t do you any favors when it comes to sway or bad roads when towing. The trailer will push you around to much. You could always get a Hensley or pro pride hitch and be safer but you’ll still be at the limits. Payload capacity is everything. That’s why when I get my next truck I’m definitely going to go Ram 2500 or Chevy 2500 so I can be around the 3000 lb mark. I currently tow with an suv and hate it.

The ultralight will weigh around 7,500 and 12.5% puts 930 lbs on your hitch. Add 70 lbs for the WDH setup. So, 1,000 lbs are used up by trailer and hitch/hardware. That leaves 600 lbs for you, your wife, and any gear.

Most people (fully clothed) will weigh in at 300 - 400 lbs for a couple. That leaves ~250 lbs for dogs, firewood, anything else in your bed, any accessories on the truck, gear/food/luggage in the truck, etc.

Probably going to be difficult to bring any friends, kids, grandkids, or other passengers.

But, it's not an automatic, "No." You can make this work and stay within the ratings.

Good luck.

I’d not tow anything in those weights with a truck name and hat begins with TOY.

Where the heck did this come from?[emoji37]
The OP owns a Nissan Titan and no post, in this thread, has mentioned Toyota.
And both Tundra and Titans are manufacturered in the USA.

I'd tow the mini in a heart beat, but the Ultra...not so sure. I pulled a 7000lb 26' Jayco for almost 10 years with F150 CC and Silverado 1500 CC with never a issue. 5.3 and 5.4 motors.

I love my Nissan Titan. Been a good 42k miles in 1.5 yrs I have had it. Yup I drive alot. Tows my bass boat alot better than my 2013 Ram Hemi or my 09 Silverado 5.3. If I ever trade trucks it will be a diesel. Where is that winning powerball ticket? LOL

You do know that Nissan has discontinued production of the Titan XD right?
No more diesel Titans.

Did they quit production of the Titan XD all together or just the Diesel engine?

that is a shame. I have a good friend has a XD Cummins and loves his.

Wife is now ticked and said if she cannot have the ultra 2612, she wants that leftover model 2503 with the murphy bed. Women. LOL. But...that is only 4500 lb ballpark. If we get that or one of the other mini's that comes in around 5400 lbs...the Titan lives. hehe Fine with me. 10k cheaper. I told her I don't care. Only camping I ever did was in the Army anyhow when I got to use a pup tent. Most was in a lovely desert east of Israel. Anything above a tent is good with me.

well we put $$ down on a new 2019 Rockwood Mini 2511. It is the early 2019 so still had the 2018 light maple decor but does not have the 360 vent and the water mgt for boondocking. They are replacing the old steps with the new mo-ride ones. We will see how it goes. I think they need to do a complete roof inspect and replace anything needed since it has sat on the lot.

I've had a Titan since they first came out. I find that a real nice weight to tow for me is 6300-6500. My MicroLite 25BDS is perfect for my 2004. The newer Titans have more HP (I've only got 305 per spec) but I make it up hills with no issues. Mine only has the 5 speed so towing is usually done in 4th (direct) but if terrain isn't too bad I get up to 11 Mpg. I believe later models have 6 speeds but I don't know exactly what or when the change was made.

I know I can tow heavier (and have) but the 25 footer I tow just feels nice and comfortable, both towing AND living in it.

Just passing 115,000 miles and almost all of that towing either a 1995 Terry 27x or my MicroLite (not counting the trash trailer I take to the dump for my son's business about twice per month. It's well over 8,000#).

Edit:

You're going to love your choice.

Just and FYI for all those Titan questions, Nissan will still be making the standard 1/2 ton Titan and also the heavy duty XD Titan for 2020, but only in the 5.6 gas versions, both in king and crew cabs, no longer made in regular cab. Also their is a big difference in the frames and weight between the regular titan and the XD titan. On a scale with a full tank of gas and myself, my XD gas titan weighs in at 7450 lbs. Before this truck I had a 2000 and 2004 F250 both diesels, This XD titan holds its own against both of those trucks in towing stability, yes the diesels had more power, but this truck feels just as stable towing my loaded 9 to 10K camper

I have a Chevy 1500 with a tow package and capacity for 7700 pounds towing? Oh yeah it will tow it but? I bought an Ultra light about 5000 empty and we are real careful what all we put in it and truck. We only go on a couple of trips a year because I am not comfortable. My boss tows a 31 foot with a new Ford F150. No way would I even consider that set up. This weekend I saw a Toyota Tundra with a 5th wheel that must have been 30 feet long. The rear of the truck was almost touching the tires? In other words be safe and smart.
