Ahh, I get it. So, by “F-150s have 7 lug wheels,” it was meant that an F-150 could have 7 lugs if the person special ordered an HDPP or found one of these unicorns in the wild. Got it. Good to know we’re using the exception to drive the rule.

That's not the way I read it at all. I read it to be that they were pointing out the "heavy" as in heavy duty(HD) versions of 1/2 ton trucks From GM and Ford had 8 and 7 lug wheels respectively. That does seem to be true in my experience and the trucks I see in my business.

Now putting the moderator hat on. The site team sees a lot of these truck/towing threads getting hijacked by a few members who seem to try and " force" their opinions and sometimes limited experiences on to others. They then double, triple, and quadruple down on their opinions. When we see that these hijacked threads are becoming a circle argument between a few, we will either close the thread or delete posts that are against the site guidelines.

As per the guidelines, state your "opinion" as it is to you or your experience, then move on. Truck and towing threads seem to bring out passionate responses from some who tend to get caught up in these passions and forget that the purpose of this community is to share knowledge and to learn from one another. This sharing needs to always be done in a friendly and productive way.

In 2016, when I discovered how overloaded my 2009 F-150 was with the new-to-me TT, I looked into the Heavy Duty Payload Package (with 7-lug wheels) since it gives you a near 3/4 ton payload number - actually more than a 3/4 ton diesel. They are very rare on the used vehicle market around here. In fact, I never saw one and still haven't. So 67L48 calling them a "unicorn" isn't far off. That may be due to a couple of factors. First, to get that package you can't have a higher trim level like the Lariat. You might be able to get an XLT. Most F-150 owners love their bling. Second, the cost of the HDPP package probably puts you close to the price of an F-250 that comes with heavier duty everything. So buyers who need the HDPP probably just opt to get a F-250 instead. The HDPP may get better fuel economy when not towing assuming you get it with the 5.0L or Ecoboost engine vs. the 6.2L gas engine in a F-250, but that's the only advantage I can think of.

I also think that the HDPP F150 is a unicorn because those that have them, love them and don't want to get rid of them.
They are also ordered by those that know the value of extra payload.

Damned expensive unicorn. Just priced a 2019 F150 w/ HDPP in the lowest trim allowed (XLT) and it came out @ $51k.

Even with today's big 1/2 ton ratings and key correct upgrades 10k is alot for a half ton. Good luck.
