Towing a Jeep Wrangler

I have to leave the key on just enough to unlock the steering. That puts a light on in the dash or radio but I didnt think that should kill the battery, but it does or has. I found the fuse that turns the light out. Oddly when I start the engine every thing seem fine but it reads out in the dash "Fuse removed"
Probably does'nt hurt any thing but I read the manual and it says to disconnect the negative battery terminal.
So I did that since it might even be easier than pulling the fuse.

What do you guys do when pulling your Wrangler?

How about a battery disconnect on your Wrangler?

On our 2004, turned the key one click and it never drained the battery. I usually run it for 5-10 minutes at a stop, along the way. But have towed it for 8-10 hours without draining the battery. What year is your Jeep?

Towing a Jeep Wrangler

Thanks emm-dee. That answers my question cause I just traded the 2004 TJ for a 2016 JK.

did a little research and found that Jeep removed the steering lock during the 07-08 model years but did not update the owners manuals. However, some have reported that some models up to '14 still had a steering lock. And, some pre-'07 did not have a lock.

Go figure.

you can also add a roadmaster charge line to the 6 pin plug from the RV. It is very easy.

Did you mean seven pin connector? I don't think most motorhomes have six pin connectors.

yes it pulls from the RV seven pin to the 6 pin plug on the jeep. It is a wire that is run from the aux pin on the jeep 6 pin plug to the jeep plug. The power comes from the rv 7 pin plug 12v pin

OK, understand. My Jeep doesn't have a six pin...only a 4-pin on the front bumper to connect the lights.

Towing a Jeep Wrangler

I’m pretty sure you don’t have a steer lock. Check your manual or park on a hill put it tow mode and leave the key out. let it roll so you can turn the steering wheel. You will know if you have a steer lock. I searched a couple of Jeep forums and they all say the steering lock stopped somewhere around 07-08.

When I hooked up the Ready Brute system we did a brake test. I rode in the Jeep while it was being towed to observe and verify brake pedal movement. The steering wheel was definitely turning left and right with no interference from a steering lock.

Emm-dee / CZNEDY - are you attending the Peach Rally this year ? If so, maybe we can find & take the Jeeps out for some trail rides !

Also - my 14 has no steering lock !

Sorry, no we won't be there. We are going to the Tadpole and hopefully the Goshen rally but that's it this year. We have a cross country trip planned for October so only two rallies. Maybe next year. Thanks,

Towing a Jeep Wrangler

I don't know the year of your Wrangler, but I have no such problems with my 2006. I did discover early on, however, that after putting the transfer case in neutral and turning the key to the off position, I needed to be careful to not continuing to turn the key to the accessory position. Turning the key beyond the first stop allows the accessories to drain the battery such as the radio, wipers, etc. Thus my battery was drained and I had to recharge it before operating the Jeep again.
