Towing a light trailer behind a 5th wheel
Hey! I got asked this question the other day and didn't have an answer. I know in some states (AZ for example) it is legal to tow a light trailer behind a 5th wheel.
Anybody know in what other States towing a light trailer behind a 5th wheel is legal?
Please! The question asked was one of legality only; not whether or not this is recommended!

OP, you will need to call the state(s) you plan on traveling. The link above is not 100% correct. I have called two states myself that said differently than the towing world link. Keep in mined also, most laws you see or read about as far as towing goes are written for commercial and not recreational. Make sure you research recreational laws.

I agree, the site is wrong and possibly outdated for some states. For example, ID.

The latest Rand McNally atlas lists all the current rules and regs of the road including towing, overall length, and whether or not people can ride in 5ers/TT.

Not all 5th wheels are created equal. Lite and Ultralite frames can not tow ANYTHING.
The Heavy duty Frames on 13,000 and up campers MAY be strong enough to handle a tow load; only a call to the manufacturer will give you piece of mind.

IL you can't some areas will let you, but you go a little down the road and you mite get a ticket. That aside when you tow a second trailer the force that comes down on that bumper area is a lot greater and could do damage.

I have a buddy that lives in IL that does it and called before hand. I don't remember the requirements but I believe he said boats and PWC and only behind a fifth wheel. Don't quote me on this though.

Oops, Rand McNally used to list towing rules and regs, but double checked the latest issue and they no longer do. Sorry about that. Best to look online for current laws.

My apologies; I was reminded the thread only asked about legality of doing it; not the practicality of doing it.

Minnesota allows you to do that. Has an overall length restriction but I don't know off hand what it is. But you can tow a boat or small trailer behind the 5th wheel here. I see it quite often.

It's illegal in WA to double tow, but the rule only applies to people with license plates from states that also ban it. If the state in which your vehicles are licensed allow double towing, you can do it in WA.

KS, MO, TX, NB, OK, AR all allow double towing ... 65' is the "legal" limit. I've double towed jet skis and a small squirt boat since 2000 with no issue. Making 2 separate trips to the lake isn't an option for me.

Oregon does not allow it, Idaho does with a 75 foot overall length.

It's legal in Michigan. If you live here, you need to get a recreational double endorsement on your license.

Read the rules in a pamphlet and take a test and pay a fee at secretary of state office. Around $10.
