Towing all wheel drive

I currently have a dolly towing a fwd Ford Focus, i'm ready to purchase a new vehicle and want to find out more about towing an all wheel drive vehicle (Escape-CRV or Outback).

Can an AWD be towed with a dolly or tow bar without damage? or are some modifications necessary?

I would think you could with a tow bar. Otherwise, you'd have to get a tow trailer (all four wheels off the ground).

Dolly not so much as most AWD vehicles are full-time.

It all depends on the vehicle and AWD system. The Honda CRV AWD can be flat towed, the Subaru cannot (based on Subaru’s recommendations/wording). You will need to research each vehicle you’re considering to know for sure, there is no universal answer.

X2^^^

It all depends on the particular gearbox arrangement and whether both sets of axles can be placed in neutral.

Our Escape is 4x4 and I tow it on a trailer, no 4 down.

Do not take any chances. See IsleDog post. Dingy guide is best source to use. I know for sure 2014 Honda CRV is the last year CRVs could be flat towed.

Check with Dinghy towing guide as to what's towable or not. We tow a '16 Chevy Equinox AWD
