Towing Experience with 3/4 ton?

We currently have a Flagstaff that weighs in around 7500 full loaded. My 3/4 ton does great with it. We're considering a Rockwood 8329SB that would check in just over 10,000 lbs with our typical load. I know I'd need to move up a notch or two with our Equal-I-Zer 4 point and I've done the math and no concerns about towing capacity. payload, etc. Well within limits. My real question is what should I expect with the actual towing experience? I know I CAN do it and I know I won't even be all that close to payload/axle/tow capacity thresholds, but it's another 6 feet and close to 3,000 lbs. My GMC is a 6.0 gasser. Appreciate any insight from others who tow with a similar vehicle toward the top end of the truck's capabilities. Thanks in advance for you help!

I would take a grain of salt on opinions from anyone towing a mini lite or pop up with a dually. Lots of those in the forum. My 3/4 ton gas ram tows my 11k pound 5th wheel just fine. And stops if for that matter. With a 2k pin weight im within specs and comfortable. You have a brand new truck I couldn't see taking the hit on a trade.

Thanks Kimber. No chance we change the truck! We're 75% there as far as the new trailer, but curious about the overall tow experience. Used to tow the current trailer with a 1/2 ton GMC and while it did okay, it struggled a bit on grades. We have a lot of mountain passes where we travel and more curious than anything about how much the additional weight would stress the truck (and me). Sounds like you've had no issues. Appreciate the feedback!

I think you will be fine. We have a Ceader Creek silverback 29rl and we tow with a 2008 2500 GMC Sierra hd 6.0. The only thing i could ask for is a little bit more low end grunt. The truck does fantastic all together. Very little squat and no problem passing on the interstate. Have fun with your new rig. Here is a pick of mine.

I towed my 31QBS Northland with two half tons and as long as I had the Equalizer as well. Both the Tubdra and Eco Boost did great

I have about 10k miles pulling a 9500lbs trailer that's over 12 feet tall with a 2017 Chevy 6.0.

What can you expect? I'm not sure exactly what you are curious about but you will get to your destination, safely, time and time again. While there certainly isn't any bragging rights about hp and torque numbers with that motor there isn't anything in the HD gas segment that compares with the 6.0 in reliability and miles worked from either Ford or Ram.

I'm not sure how your truck behaves with your current trailer but on flat ground my truck will pull in overdrive (5th) but it doesn't take much of a hill to require 4th. A moderate head wind will require 4th also. (I drive the speed limit or a little better if I have open road up to about 74mph). The trailer you're looking at is longer but a foot less in height compared to mine...frontal area combined with speed plays a big roll.

I've encountered a few grades that I couldn't hold the speed limit but nothing has ever dropped me below 50mph...(not that there aren't roads capable of doing so). Next year we're spending time out west in the big grades and I'm looking forward to it. The mountains on both ends of this country are gorgeous and if they slow me down to half the speed limit it will just make it that much easier to take in the views.

Sounds like you are set with what you want, and have no desire to trade trucks, so Just go with it. It will all be personal opinion. Your truck is more than capable with that load by the numbers.
I towed with a new 2016 Ram 2500 Crew Cab Long Bed 4x4 Hemi 6.4.. I loved it towing our 7K ish trailer, and I really thought it did well going to the beach etc with the 10K TT we replaced it with.. What I ddn't like was getting on long hills heading up into the mountains screaming at 5K rpms.. But to some folks, that is not bothersome. It was to me though, just that one trip up into WV on tight curves running uphill at steep grades was the last time before I traded. If I had not experienced its behavior in that type of scenario I would most likely kept it.

Just my opinion going from a diesel to a gasser pulling almost the same fifth wheel. We have the Rockwood 8289WS that is close to your numbers and 13 feet tall. Mid season last year we sold our Ford diesel and went to a Ram 6.4 Hemi gasser. The Gasser does not pull the rig as easy as the diesel but it does it well enough that we are satisfied. We're never in that big of a hurry that a few extra fuel stops bothers us. Enjoy your new unit when you get it and congrats.

Sounds like very similar truck and trailer to me, although my truck is a 2014 with 3.73 so you should be in a better power position.

I use a Blue Ox sway pro and it does very well. Sometimes the wind may push me a little but truck and TT move as one, no sway.

I would not be concerned at all.

Most new gas trucks can tow a trailer without any effort. My biggest issue how do you fill up with gas when you are on the highway towing your trailer.

I know when I towed a 5er with my 2500, 6.0L gas truck it was extremely difficult to fill up the gas tank with my 5er attached.

It was so, bad I told my wife we either sell the trailer or buy a new diesel truck. We only owned the 5er for a month at the time, this second time out towing. I could not get in and out of most gas stations do the construction of the fuel islands and the gas station building.

I went with a diesel vehicle and never looked back since I can use the diesel truck fuel islands to fill up at.

That's a loaded question around here. By the time people are done recommending trucks, you know because it's better to have plenty of overkill for safety sake, you will be trading for a Kenworth T680.

You are fine. Remember the extra length and I'm sure you will be feeling the extra weight going up long steep grades and everything will be fine.

In a vast majority of the time, these trucks feel fine towing loads even when moderately overloaded. So, it's the rare exception when trucks are within all limits and don't tow OK.

I can never remember the guy's name, but there's a person here who tows with a F-250 6.2L and a 5er over the highest Colorado passes without issue. He usually posts a picture of his rig on Monarch Pass (~11,500' with 6-7% grades).

If you're within limits, then hitch and go. Enjoy.

I had a 34ft Salem Hemisphere at 10,400 lbs that I pulled with my Chevy 2500 6.0L gasser and now have a 5th wheel. The pull with the travel trailer will be a small amount of sway more with the extra weight....... but if you would just consider a 5th wheel you will see an effortless pull.

I pull a 35ft Spree Connect that's 9k loaded tv s a 2016 GMC 2500 6 l gasser. Pulls it effortlessly has lots of power on moderate hills and keeping up with highway traffic.

FYI-if you have the 1000/10000 Equal-i-zer you have to change Both the bars and the head to move to the 1200/12000 model. Only downside I have experienced w/ the Equal-i-zer WDH. I sold mine and just bought a whole new system because it was the same cost w/ the whole unit on sale.

Well, mine is a different brand PU, but I've used them all in our construction company. I pull ours near the limit and it handles fine. The 'mountains' do slow me down out here-- sometimes to 48mph; but a lot of times that is because I had to slow down while behind a semi.
Gas stations, that comment from Jim W is not my experience out here in the West. We can get in and out of nearly any gas station that has high enough canopies. Besides, my tank fills as fast as my PU tank empties-- so we are usually in agreement on stops.

Over 15,000 miles my 2006 F250 Short-Bed SRW PSD has towed my 35’ LOA (32’ nominal) Forest River Salem SRV32LE Toy Hauler 5er at trailer weights between 14 and 15,000 LB.

Our TT us just under 9000 lbs gross. Not as tall as the one you are looking at. Pulling weight up some 8% grades spun the engine up but that is what it supposed to do. My vote is that you are well off.

Shouldn't have any kind of issues with that truck well below towing capacity . which should be around 14000 lbs on that 19 . and i'm sure well within payload specs . the 6.0 is very capable . The last 5 yrs been going from montana to florida with an 03 2500 6.0 and a 9300 lbs TH no issues . i now have a 2019 2500 6.0 with even a bit more power and 14100 tow rating and 3000 lbs payload . up passes like IKE you maybe running 45 or 50 at 4200 rpm but the engine provides it peak torque at that range . so it's meant to run there
