Question Towing Question

Does anyone tow a Salem trailer with a Ford F150? We are looking at one and do not know what would be the best vehicle to tow it with. Thanks so much

You need to provide a lot more information than you have. What year Ford? What engine size? Max tow package? Gross vehicle weight? Gross max combined weight rating of the Ford? What size Salem? Max gross weight of the Salem? Tongue weight of the Salem? And that's just for starters.

I tow a 2017 Forest River Salem Cruise Lite 231RKXL with a 2016 F150 XLT 5.0 V8, FX4 6.5' Bed Supercab, 3.55 Gear Ratio, Loadlifter 5000 Air Springs. Truck handles the trailer very well, plenty of power for mountain passes, and no issues at all.

I also have a Eaz-Lift Trekker 14,000 lb hitch that works great.

Has anyone towed a trailer with a truck before?

F-150s have changed a lot over the past 15 years. My 2005 is pretty anemic. Today's F-150 with the EB and HDPP would probably be a better platform than a Super Duty gasoline truck of 10 years ago. Huge range of capability.

In fact, the capability of 1/2 tons has changed so radically over the past decade that it has led to many debates here. I was among those who would dismiss a 1/2 ton far too readily because I was using an outdated definition of what a 1/2 could do.

So, it's critical that you tell us specifics. The more you tell us, the more people will be able to help.

Good luck.

I think everyone has an opinion on this but I'd completely disagree. The new F150 is Rated for towing by the manufacturer for higher numbers. However, what I've seen is multiple people that have attempted this and come up with issues.

Multiple family members I have can personally contest to this.

If you're towing a 24' ultra-light under 5k, the F-150 may do it just fine. If you're pulling a 30' 7k plus trailer (with cargo) you're entering the realm of the HD truck.

My 2007 F-350 6.0 Turbo-Diesel will out-pull any F-150 out there and will last a lot longer.

OK, you might be missing my point and I apologize if I accidentally steered this to a 1/2 ton vs HD platform debate (but I bet your 6.0 PSD doesn't run on gasoline, either). It wasn't my intention to go that route. My point was intended to be: It's critical that the OP gives details.

It's undeniable that a 2019 3.5 EB HDPP F-150 is a completely different animal than my 2005 5.4L F-150. That's the point I was going for. Things have changed so much, that it's pretty important to list what the F-150 is.

Where you land on this poster is going to have a fairly significant effect on how the question of capability/capacity gets answered:

And, on the "Salem trailer," yeah ... details.

Here's a "Salem trailer":

Here's another "Salem trailer":
