Towing Salem 27RKSS

We have a 2016 Salem 27RKSS and tried towing it with a Tundra 1/2 ton last year. It was way too much trailer for the truck so it was no surprise that we ran into problems. We are looking at 3/4 or 1 ton vehicles for this season. I am wondering what your suggestions would be for a 7,800 pound trailer.

What size engine is in your Tundra? I am towing a catelina with a 2012 tundra 5.7l. We are around 8500 to 9000 loaded. No issues at all. I have a good wieght distribution hitch and firestone ride rite 5000 airbags.

For that weight, most 3/4 ton trucks will work great. Most are rated for up to 13K+ lbs pull. But depending on if new/used, you may just consider a 1 ton. The difference in price on new ones are usually less than $1K, same size (SRW), and same fuel mileage. But you now have the bigger truck for your bigger trailer in the future.

bgigacz - According to his profile the tundra is a 2004, therefore at best it has a small V8 which is not enough for that trailer.

Like you I tow a 9000 lb plus 5er with the 5.7 tundra with no issues at all.

We have a 2004 Tundra double cab. I am not sure what the engine size is. It is rated for 6800 pounds. We didn't have much problem with the motor taking care of it. We had a lot of problems with the wind. Any crosswind over 10 MPH would push me all over the road at highway speeds. Couldn't go over 50 MPH once the wind picked up. Part of this could be the way the WDH was set up, but we are over the tow rating either way.

I think I am going to go with the 1 ton. It is a small amount to pay for the added comfort in knowing that there won't be any white knuckle driving this summer.

Son has a 1 ton ford.. and the thing rides like a road wagon without a load on it.. When he has his 1500 pound welder in the bed it's great..without it, not so much. Might be something to consider. I personally would not own a 1 ton unless I was using it on a regular basis.

You should look into a Titan XD. I have one and also own a 27rkss. To me the XD is the perfect balance for this size TT. Plenty of towing capabilities but still has the comfort of a 1/2 ton. And you can get a really nicely loaded XD for the same price as a stripped down 3/4 or 1 ton.
