Towing trailer with fifth wheel

I would like to take a golf cart with me when camping but their is nowhere to carry it pulling the fifth wheel. I have a small trailer that I could hook behind the trailer to carry the golf cart on. I wonder if I can double tow in all the states.

Knock yourself out. I wouldn't do it on a bet.

It’s not legal in most of the eastern states. I know Florida specifically does not allow it.

In Arkansas, your little trailer would be too small. Here, it has to be a boat trailer. Least, it appears so, from just my noticing................

i see it all the time here in Arizona. I think there is an overall length limit but I don't know what it is.

While Idaho Tote says it’s not a trailer, a while back someone here on the forum asked their friend who is a Virginia State Trooper. The trooper said they would consider it a trailer anyway.

While he may be wrong, I wouldn’t necessarily want to be at the mercy of someone’s judgement on the side of the road.

Here's an old thread with some real "outside the box" ideas applied to how you can bring a golf cart and a fifth wheel along:

http://www.forestriverforums.com/for...art-69561.html

Ultimately though, I believe most of this was theoretical.

Back to the original question, about whether or not it's legal to double tow, I'm curious how the reciprocal laws work between states. Seems contradictory to say "If you're legal in your state, you're legal here" when applied to weight limits , but on the flip side to say "Don't matter if you're legal in your state, you're illegal here" when applied to the double tow.

Not that I'm advocating double towing. Personally, I'd never consider double towing, as I would never be able to backup like that. I have enough trouble backing up short utility trailers as it is before you add a second articulating joint to the mix. But that's me, and I'm not the OP.

Ependydad. very good and very true statement. We are all at the mercy of one officer or another to make a decision on what they think is right or wrong. I have also heard one person saying that they can possibly make the fifth wheel a little bit unstable. I'd like to talk to somebody first hand who has one.

Are some of you folks that are saying it's not allowed realize it is called double towing and not triple towing? Double towing is OK in a lot of states (not all), triple towing isn't allowed in a lot of states. You should check with the state's DOT authority that you will be towing in and not rely on the opinions of other RVers.

Legally, some states call it double towing, while other states call the same thing triple towing.

This is triple towing. I've seen trucks pulling three trailers in Indiana where not surprisingly, I found the Interstates to be in terrible condition.

What Spock wants to do is double towing, and yes it is illegal in some states, in the east the only state hat allows it is Md. but I have seen it being done up and down 95, does it make it legal...NO....just hope you are not stopped. The swivel wheel trailer is still a questionable thing and really most states still are not sure and like Doug said you are at their mercy if stopped. Safest bet is still a toy hauler if you want to be legal or do what we do convert a class 8 tractor and carry whatever you want......but keep in mind what we do is considered questionable also and opens up a whole other can of worms
Regarding the triple trailer pictured shown remember that is commercial which is a completely different set of rules.

I live in ohio and travel up to timmins Ontario Canada every yr, and I’m always amazed at how many people are double towing up through MI. I always thought man what a pain in the you know what that must be to get in and out of gas stations. Doesn’t sound like much fun to me, but to each their own

This unit is legal

The DOT considers the Idaho Tote a Tag unit which means it is an extension of your RV. It attaches two solid points to the RV and does not have a pivot point like a trailer. It has articulating axles so you can back up the RV and Tote as one!!! Just got one for my Arctic Wolf 5th and it is great but not cheap. Legal everywhere. Comes in 6ft to 10ft lengths. Hope this helps http://www.idahotote.com/wp-content/...ote_update.pdf

I have a friend that tows a boat behind his 5th. He said where they allow it, the rule has to do with the overall length. He has a mid size 5th with a short ski boat and said he is about a foot over but hasn't been pulled over and measured.
