Towing/weight capacity

I had an interesting conversation on our recent camping trip. The guy next door was asking how our Tundra was doing towing out Rockwood UL 2440WS. After he found out the weight of the trailer he said that the Tundra could tow more than posted as I was towing a fifth wheel. I see that with fifth wheel towing the kingpin weight is higher than with a TT but does this increase the weight that can be towed? I’m confused.

Not sure I'm following. BUT........."The weight that can be towed" is misleading. The Payload is more important. Satisfy that capacity FIRST and most likely the towing capacity won't be an issue. Do it backwards from that and issues are likely.

He seemed to indicate that because it was a fifth wheel there was more total weight allowed. The only thing I saw in my truck manual was a different pin weight calculation for fifth wheels.

Well, Tundra's are known to have low payload capacities compared to Ford and GM.
Payload Capacity is much more important with 5th wheels, since their pin weights are higher than a comparable TT's tongue weight.
Your 2440ws has a fictional "dry" pin weight of 1134lbs.
But that's for a stripped-down version of the trailer. So options, batteries, water and cargo can quickly eat up the truck's payload capacity.
Post what the payload sticker on the driver's door sticker says. It'll say "Occupants and cargo should not exceed xxxxlbs."

Check msg specs on GCWR, tow capacity and GVWR and axle payload. Nothing you can do or tow
Changes those numbers.

I’m going to have to load up my fifth wheel and pull on a set of scales. If I was overloaded on the pin weight maybe I could have a leg to stand on when asking DW about a new truck

consider the axle and tire limits also

cumminsforum has this discussion in a few threads, for the RAM 2500 and 3500. I was looking at a 5th wheel and knew the pin weight was more than my 2500 could handle. I have a 2012 356RL and weighs 10500 to 14000 and some 40'. What I was looking at started at 15300 pounds and certainly more pin weight! Weigh your truck loaded as you would drive. Full fuel, camp junk, wife, kids, dogs, and hitch. Take that number from the sticker in the drivers door, the trucks max gross weight, and that gives your allowable payload, pin weight. Several will say you can go over payload, as long as you aren't over the axle or tire max. And that's where I fall, over payload but under axle max gross and under max towable limit. I tell myself its within reason as I find nothing that proves a 2500 can't carry close to the 3500 single rear wheel. My 2500 max gross is limited to 10,000 pounds and the 3500 at around 3500 with rear axles to 7000? Same frame, engine, transmission, but springs instead of coils. You can use the payload as a definitive answer or consider the max axle and wheels. I assume it's the same for a travel trailer. But after I did the math, which was after I got this behemoth, I was surprised at low low my actual payload is - just 1200 pounds for a 2018 RAM 2500 megacab.

My TT has a GVWR of just under 9000 lbs. 15% x 9000 = 1350. With bed liner & hitch. my Tundra's payload is 1300 lbs. I need a bigger truck or a smaller trailer.

I might fall in the same category but would need to get to a scale to see what my loaded weight is.Over payload but under everything else.

Go ahead and get it weighed - loaded with all gear, water and fuels you would carry. 5er pin weight (I am told) go about 20% of GVWR which would put over 1600 lbs before you load any people in the truck.

Well, I'm sure you're way over payload. That leaves only 286lbs for you and passengers and 5th wheel hitch. Also the added weights of batteries, water, options and cargo to the pin weight.

I have a 2015 Ford F-350 6.7L diesel with a 3:55 rear gear. Will it tow this 5th wheel?

I’m probably overweight somewhere sometimes, I have a extra fuel tank in bed of truck but it doesn’t stay full all the time. I need a dually, it would be nice if I could convince DW, I’m only the boss when she is not around
