Truck stop diesel pumps + 5th wheel

Are there issues we need to think about for RVs rather than tractor trailers? What about DEF pumps?

I use the truck lanes when traveling with the 5er... including using the DEF pumps... no issue

I've only had two issues, one was the nozzles for the big rigs pump a whole lot more fuel faster than the passenger car lanes so be careful. Second I've run into two truck stops that would only sell from the truck lanes if you had a DOT number. Evidently they didn't have a way to calculate the tax and charge for it.

no problem. as stated earlier the diesel nozzles are larger than the ones on the car islands. the hassle is that you need to position at the pump, take the credit card into the cashier (wait in line), go back and pump, them back to the cashier to complete the sale. advantage is they have window squeegies with long handles.

I have heard that the tax can be different / not charged at truck lanes. But I have never had an issue with them. Only had one pump in MI that did not fit my truck's fill port but I could hold it in place. Filled my 36 gallons in 45 seconds LOL

I cannot use the DEF since the fill is in the hood and too short to reach.

Both loves and pilot/flying j have cards that will activate truck lane pumps without going inside. I really appreciate those high volume pumps.

I could never get the J to work, but I have a Good Sam card, not a J credit card. I did sign up for the Loves but never used it yet.

I just got one of those cards last week. I am hopeful it works.

But...........I also got a 37 gallon auxiliary tank, so not sure I'll need to get in line at the 'back pumps' with the truckers like I've had to. Probably will sooner or later, somewhere.

It is definitely impossible, for me at least, to get into the front auto diesel pumps. Well, actually, I can get in most of them. I just can't get out because they've all gone to pump lanes perpendicular to the street, not parallel.

Speedway.......I love 'em. Try to find them whenever I can. They have separate (and by separate I mean 200 yards away) truck and RV lanes, WITH DEF fluid pumps.

Some truck stops have an RV lane with smaller nozzles. Be aware they often have a sign hanging lower than the roof clearance. I scraped my front AC on the sign once (I'm full profile fiver with full size front AC )

If you use the big misleading get it stuck in the truck... been there done that. Run it slower so you don't get a diesel fuel shower when disconnecting... been there done that.

Some of the pumps ask for DOT numbers, or truck numbers. One of the selections is to skip it. Never had a problem doing that and getting my fuel.

Love them. Do make sure you pull forward after filling so the next guy can start pumping.

I stopped in Loves truck stop to fuel and guesstimate the amount of fuel I need. They put the amount on my credit card. If I don't use the whole amount they said the difference will go back on my card. I fill up and drive away.

One issue that no one has mention is the satellite pumps at truck stops. When you pull in to a travel plaza, make sure that the driver side pump is not the satellite pump. I have run into this issue sometimes. What you need to do if this happens is to put the primary pump hose on the ground and fill from the satellite pump. Also the Ram/Dodge trucks will take the truckers size nozzle without any issues at all.
Now when you go in the station to pre-pay the attendant will ask you if this is for diesel fuel or DEF, since they are dispensed from the same pump. If you do need DEF you might need to ask for a magnet to allow the DEF pump to provide you with DEF. The attendant has the magnet which you can borrow.
I also do not fill up anywhere in IN with my trailer attached because of the road tax issue in IN. I either fill-up in IL or some other surrounding state to avoid that problem. I have a hard time fitting into the AUTO lanes with my Cedar Creek.

If the DEF hose is too short at the pump, why not just use it to fill and empty DEF container then pour it in?

That's all I'd do but I just never need the DEF when I am stopped.

I can go for more than a full tank of diesel once the DEF warning comes on so I can fill at my next gas stop.

Yeah I get 7 to 8k before I need to refill (about every oil change. This will go to the lower end if I am towing a lot during that period.

DEF usage for me has been 7.5 gallons thus far with about 15k on the odometer.
