You need a one ton. I pull a 10k fifth wheel with my 3/4 ton, wouldnt want to go much higher.

As you mentioned defiantly go with the rear air ride it will make either the 3/4 or 1 ton ride better unloaded. I love mine. Later RJD

The problem is that this 5er will be ~13,500 rolling down the road and dropping a pin weight of 2,700 lbs. Add in 100 for the hitch and you're at 2,800. Add a normal clothed couple at 350 and ... the payload is evaporating really, really quick. As mentioned above, if you already had that rig, no problem. But, if you're shopping, why go with a GVWR/payload strapped rig? Just grab the 1 ton and be done with it.
Agree 100% I just threw that out there because alot of people are still under the impression that gas 3/4 tons have more payload then a diesel 3/4 ton that is no longer the case anymore.

Not that the OP is considering a gasser...I passed on the one ton because of registration fees in CA and the deal I got on my 3/4 ton fast forward a year after buying my 2500 I move to NC I thought shoot I should have bought the one ton but so far so good...

If and when the time comes and and a start looking at 5th wheels all the ones I like I'm going to need a dually for it anyway Or go the motorhome route...I believe I can handle any of the bumper pull Rockwoods Signatures I like those also and keep my truck.

Just be aware the RV salesman will tell you that truck will be fine. Make up your own mind about it based on the numbers.

I don’t have a 5er. But from what I’ve seen here is to expect the pin weight to be closer to 20% of total weight

Although the truck could handle it, and this will cause a lot of debate, I’d think about the legality of exceeding the 10k limitation on the truck’s GVWR. If in an accident, any lawyer worth his salt would tear into you. Decide for yourself if it’s worth the risk. I hope this doesn’t turn into a tangential debate. Just mentioning it because I would consider it myself.

Finally, I’d think hard about the diesel. Gas mileage would be better daily and towing. My 2500 gets around 22 mpg at 70 mph according to the lie o meter, and around 14 total towing trip on flat ground. You’d likely see 7ish towing that big face 5er with a gasser (my estimate).

Good luck (and go Diesel 3500)

Also, check out the height of the tailgate/bed vs. the overhang height of the 5er to make sure that you'll have the appropriate clearance between the two.

If you get the factory air bag system, you have an alternate trailer height option, which will lower the bed down 1" at the touch of a button.

So if standard suspension is too high, that will give you an inch to work with, so to speak.

I have a 28’ 5th wheel, tow vehicle is a 3/4 T Chevy diesel. Loaded up, I’m within 400 lbs of my cargo capacity. Anything heavier and I would get a 1 ton. I have the 6’6” bed and use a Pullrite Superlite 20K hitch on a BandW gooseneck. Easy to remove and I have my bed back. Slider not required, plenty of clearance.

My new Coachmen Brookstone 310rl is the same weight. I went with the 1 ton Duramax because the throttle response was wayyyy better than the dodge. The corners are clipped on these new 5th wheels, so you do not need to worry about a special hitch. Andersen is the way to go. The 1 ton truck was $500 more than the 2500. No brainer.

I have two friends who thought the same way about the 'new fifth wheels with clipped corners' and not having to worry about it. One even has the Anderson. And after many trips to the rough backcountry with us during this covid season, they both now have 'experience dents' in their cabs, and one has a new back window. Rookies.....
'Almost 90°' means it can still hit the cab, especially in the back country and it's manuevering challenges on uneven ground

Why does it have to be a 3/4 ton? 1 ton looks the same, drives the same, costs is about the same and in many states it's much cheaper to license. Where's the downside?

If you take a look at my signature you can see my setup. I bought my 2500HD Diesel prior to buying my 36CK2. It pulls it great. However if I had bought the 36CK2 first then the truck, I probably would buy the 3500HD Diesel now. Definitely do a Diesel as you won't regret it even though new they are around $10,000 more than a Gas.

Be careful we thought we were watching our weights. We got 3500 diesel GMC and was was watching the weights on are payload, axle and trailer when we got one. We went with the silverback 33ik with a hitch weight (in the book of 2067) and got a second air conditioner, washer and dryer, awning toppers and an air ride hitch that my husband accounted for and figured even being loaded would be 400 under our max limit. After picking up our trailer we went straight to get it weighed - we our 400 under our max limit without any thing in it. Not sure what we are going to do yet. Looks like we either need a different trailer or a different truck which are both brand new. Considering how much hassle this has been this year with trying to get our trailer with COVID (ordered our in June and just got in September) I am ready just to forget camping or sale both and get a Motorhome.

Keep it simple and go with a 1 ton. I went from a 3/4 chevy 2500 gas to a 1 ton GMC 3500 single rear wheel, I do usr this as my daily driver so I didn't want a dually. I would reconsider your thought on bed length, go with a full 8' bed, you won't regret the space.

The ride isn't any worst than a 3/4, the leaf spring setup on the GMC doesn't engage for the extra weight until you load the bed so it makes the ride better on your day to day travels.
