Spent a year towing my 310BHDS with a Tundra (gross weight 9900lbs). After doing some research about cargo capacity, I quickly figured out I was over my limits by a significant amount. Traded my Tundra for a 3/4 ton Chevy diesel and now all is right in my little camping world.

Ecapee Scale

I had mine weighed, where each wheel was weighed, then moved items in the trailer and readjusted Equalizer WDH. When we reweighed, it was improved but still over on the cargo capacity w/ full gas,DW, Dog and camp stuff in bed. They ask you to weigh w/ water tank full, I do not tow that way. Interesting and much more helpful than CAT scales.

My DW and I like the comfort and power of our 2007 DC, long bed, 5.7L, tow package SR5. We've pulled 27' and 30' TT's from OR to TX and back without a problem. Thanks to this forum, we are more aware of the cargo capacity factor.

Tundra

I have 5.5' bed w/ Maxi cab 1794. All the goodies cut into the cargo cap-down to 1335. Second Tundra I have had, great trucks. Our trailer is just too nose heavy. We added Timbron bump stops which helped more than anything else we added.

We tow a 21' tt with gvw 5100 lbs with our 2006 Toyota Tundra extended cab v8. We've towed about 30,000 miles through most states and it's been very reliable. Lately it tows mostly within Texas.

Only “concerns” I have going in will be the lack of range given the 26 gallon fuel tank and the Tundra’s notoriously low fuel mileage. I’ll try and update in a couple of weeks after our first trip.
I take a couple 5 gal tanks with me on out of state trips, just in case. Would love to have the 38 gal

I don’t plan on any dry camping so probably won’t be towing any distances with the tanks loaded. Thanks for the advice, have a nice evening.
I'm not sure how you figure you won't be overweight? I don't know what the curb weight or payload capacity of your specific truck is, but let's assume it's the max available.

Max payload 4x2 CM - 1520LB
Max payload 4x4 CM - 1440LB
Max tongue weight - 990LB (4x2) or 900LB (4x4)

You stated a max tongue weight of 1,320LB for your trailer. That is 330-420LB over the max tongue weight Toyota allows.

If you have a 4x2 with 1520LB payload, subtract 1320LB from that. That leaves you with 200LB of payload capacity. Do you weigh over 200LB? If so, you'll be over the truck's GVWR as soon as you get into the driver's seat. Payload capacity is for ALL occupants and any non-factory items/gear in and on the truck. Not sure if you realized that or not, but it's not what the truck can haul with a cab full of people.

Now, if it's a 4x4 then 1440 - 1320 = 120LB payload left before anyone gets into the truck.

Either someone explained the numbers to you wrong or you're not understanding how the ratings/capacities work, but there is a high probability that your truck will be overweight as soon as, and possibly even before, you get into the driver's seat.

I'd budget 10 mpg. That's probably a bit on the low side, but we budget conservatively.

With the Michelin's we averaged 10 to 12 mpg. Once we put on the off road 10 plys we dropped to 8 to 9 mpg. That was with the 27' and 30' TT's.

Thanks. I’m planning for 30 L/100km or 8 mpg but I do try to go slower as well to save fuel, like average 65 in a 70 zone. I’ll be towing a Primetime Avenger ATI 26BB that weighs 4718 lb dry maybe 5500 lb loaded.

My Tundra gets significantly better gas mileage at 55 mph that it does at 65 mph, (and even better at 50 mph) but who can stand to drive that slow!?!? (Especially in Texas!)

I don’t want to be a safety hazard so I won’t drive slower than 6 mph (10 km/h) under the speed limit on multi lane highways, and I won’t go under the speed limit on 2 lane roads but those roads have 50-65 mph speed limits anyway.

If I can find a semi to follow who’s going at or under the speed limit, I’ll draft behind them to save a bit more on fuel while going a little faster.

Towing

Pulling 7300 lb. 27.5 VLS-V-front Flagstaff w/ 2014 1794 CM. I have the 5.7 w/ TRD sway bar, 5100 Bilsteins, Timbren and Michilin LTX Defenders. Getting average 9-9.5 MPG. in TX. In hills of Arkansas and Georgia, 8-8.5 MPG. Love the truck, but max cargo cap is 1360 w/ all options on CM. Moving to 1 ton.
