Unicorn Of Sorts

We were away for the weekend camping and I was admiring our neighbors newer 3500 Chevy dually I think it was a 2019......While admiring the truck I noticed it wasn't a diesel it was a gasser which I have to say I don't really see many later model dually's that aren't Diesels...

Anyway got to talking to the owner and he said he did a special order on it he couldn't find any on the dealer lots when he was looking to buy....He was towing a Keystone Hideout 5th wheel if I had to venture a guess it was no more then 10-12K

Lots of gas duallys of all years around the farms here. Most heavy haulers prefer diesel, others prefer gas due to gas being cheaper in the past.

Deisel pickups have less payload capacity due to the much heavier engine.

A 2018 Ram diesel has a 5800 pound payload according to a CAT scale.

Even though it may have more payload wouldn't the tow rating on the gas dually be less then the Diesel dually ?

If I was going to buy a dually to specifically pull a fifth wheel I personally would never get the gasser.

The payload numbers only concern the weight police!

What maters is the GAWR (rear) and the GCWR of the truck. For example a crew cab, 8' bed, 4X4 (4:10 diff.) truck with a 6.4L gas engine; has a GAWR (rear) of 7,000 LBS and a GCWR of 24,000 LBS. The same truck equipped with a 6.7L diesel engine has a GAWR (rear) of 9,750LBS and the GCWR of 30,300 LBS.

I would choose the diesel engine truck, time and again over a gas engine truck. As for the cost of the diesel engine over a gas engine, this is recovered when you either trading the truck in or selling it out right.
