HAHA!!
Both of your posts have been trying to pick fights with anything not Toyota. If you're going to act like a snob, you might as well own it.

One does not simply go from a FJ to a Dodge Durango. But it's a Toyota/Lexus thing, you wouldn't understand!!

I would say I predicted the OP's next move pretty well, as he is sticking with the Toyota family. So call me names if you want, I'm right and I win! HAHA

My number one concern is towing 400lb shy of a 5000lb class III. Because of differences in your trip, length, extra gear, your weight is constantly changing. I'm constantly seeing people today towing 6500lb dry weight trailers with SUV that have a total capacity of 6 to 6500lbs gross. As with the other post...IMO...I'm more inclined to lean toward a 1/2 ton with a 5.3L at least. I got tired of getting new TV every time we got new trailer, so I took the advice of one of my sons and went 6.6L Duramax/Allison and should never have to worry about towing capacity.

No, But you may have to be concerned about cargo capacity being a 3/4 ton Diesel if you upgrade too much.

Ill roll the dice on a diesel and losing a little cargo capacity . Ill take a diesel over ANY gas truck ANY day . lol You guys always bring up the lesser cargo capacity on a diesel which frankly sometimes it sounds like an excuse to justify buying a lesser truck .

To the OP why did I miss it or do you need an SUV ? Why not get a nice Tundra and be done with it ?

Oh Nonsense, many of us don't need a diesel just to say we have a diesel so we can pull our 8K pound trailers. You know, big diesels and smaller trailers would make it look like you're compensating for a lack of something..L

My Xterra doesn't have a problem pulling my 2306 Rockwood Mini-lite @3808# dry- 4300# loaded. Doesn't even get to 210'f when pulling hills. I live in a mountainous province and there are hills everywhere. Your FJ should be able to pull your TT.

I never said NEED ..lol I just prefer the mileage and power of a diesel . The down hill braking capabilities are leap and bounds better as well . I get it some folks dont NEED a diesel truck but most would be lying if they said they wouldn't trade there gas truck for a diesel if it didn't cost them anything .

I'll be the first to admit...I was extremely disappointed in my previous TV selections. I had 5.3L 5.4L 6.0L and tow capacities 3 to 4000lbs above what i was pulling at the time. I would never have attempted to pull my trailer thru mountains with any of them. I've now gone diesel...and won't go back.

I just bought the DW a new GX460 and while the motor seems strong, I'm not sure I would tow a 4000lb trailer with it (personal preference). Although my previous RV towing experience was done with a Dmax. I've owned a few luxury suvs from several different manufacturers and I'll have to say, the Lexus has them beat.

I wouldn't, even if I came out ahead, not for a newer one anyway, My son runs a 2013 f 350 6.7 and he is the one who steered me away from the diesel after his current experiences, at least for our purpose.

No engine difference though.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Like someone mentioned, I may have an existing overheating issue. It was 98 degrees here and my temp started to climbing to 4/5 of the way at a red light (AC was on medium). It shouldn't be doing that, maybe a fan clutch issue - not drawing crosswind to the radiator?

As for the GX, the wheelbase concerns me. The 4.7L also straddles the max tow threshold. I am a Toyota guy and may start looking at LX 570's. You can find low mileage LX's for mid 30's. I believe the 5.7L V8 will give me the 100% piece of mind I'm looking for. Family first, toy trucks second.

Thanks everyone!

It sounds like you love your FJ, what mods have you done to it? Have you had it looked at by a mechanic to see what might be causing problems?

You'll always have that one person who buys a new ???? and because that one ???? is a POS, they all must be. There is no comparison in towing with a diesel compared to gas, doesn't matter what you tow.

Like anything new, some early Ford 6.7s had some trouble, but I haven't heard much bad about any recent ones.

Ford's diesel issues aren't isolated incidents.

There are departments around here that will not authorize Ford diesel purchases for their fleets now because of so many problems they experienced in the past. It isn't just internet folklore.

jonshonda,
Again, I'll correct your original statement, which should have read:
'The OP is a Toyota OWNER, looking at a Lexus AND A JEEP, and people suggest a Dodge Durango.'

Make suggestions all you want. But making false statements, as if the OP was only considering Toyota products, skews the discussion, and shuts down communication. That's not the best use of community forums like this.

^It was a joke bud...You gotta let it go!

I just don't ever see someone going from a Toyota to a jeep....I just don't think it's a Jeep Thing.
