I think the instructions on using a sway bar do indicate one should loosen the friction on the bar when backing. Or simply remove it before backing up. I usually do one or the other. As far as driving straight, highway driving, it doesn't make any noise.

I really think my dealer who installed it did not grease it at all. Even before I drove it I could feel a very noticeable difference on how easily the bars moved in and out on the hitch before I hooked the trailer up.

You should never put any grease on the L brackets. These are what gives the hitch the ant-sway.

Simply greasing up the hitch anywhere you see metal contacting metal can significantly reduce the anti-sway properties of the hitch.

For those with Equal-i-Zer 4-point hitches, I agree that adding 'sway bracket jackets' and applying grease where indicated reduces the groaning. However, as the Equal-i-Zer manual suggests - if it's making noise, it's doing its job.

Ensuring the socket bolts are set to the proper torque may also help.

You can and should grease the contact points on the hitch head where the bars attach.

Thanks. i'll add that to try after lubing. 1 thing at a time of course, other wise I won't know what was effective. ;-)

NEVER!

NEVER lubricate the friction points on your anti-sway bars! The noise you hear is energy absorbed by friction resulting in heat and noise. The noisier the better they function.

Inspect friction points every time you saddle up - at some point you might need to install new bars and saddles. The friction wears down the steel. Just because the friction points may be noisy and show some rust, that's not a reason to call for the WD40!

Equalizer makes a pad to aid in reducing some noise. I use them and they work pretty well.

Sway Control?

If you have a friction sway control, that is most likely what is groaning at low speed. You can loosen it up some to do away with the noise as long as it does not cause you to lose sway control. Also, friction sway control is supposed to be removed before you back up.
