If it was a GM truck a WDH would not be required until there was significantly more weight on the tongue. My 17 doesn't need one at 2000lbs on the tongue and I don't use one for my trailer with 1500 on the ball. Tows fantastic at the speed limit even across the windy plains out west.
Look in the manual for your truck. It was tested under SAE J2807. Part of that test checks the amount of tongue weight that it takes to negatively affect handling (when a wdh is needed to return handling).
If your truck requires a wdh, then by all means you should get one. If it doesn't do what everyone (wdh or not) should be doing with proper loading...Load tongue heavy. Keep from adding weight behind your trailer's axles.
